Unstoppable Domains โ€” Expired Auctions

discuss Is the hardest part of domaining today no longer buying, but deciding what not to buy?

With thousands of extensions, endless trends, and constant deals, it feels like opportunity is everywhere.

But maybe that's the problem. Buying domains has never been easier, yet decision fatigue has never been higher.

For those active in domaining today, what's harder for you: spotting opportunities, or saying no to them?

Iโ€™m at that stage now โ€” happy when a domain I wanted is already taken. Not a domainer anyway.:xf.smile:

Possibilities are endless, opportunities in their truest sense are rare.

I'm spotting opportunities because .com dominance will end.
The point is when dominance will end ... because in the meantime you have to pay renewals fees.

Those two choices arenโ€™t the only ones in play, for many people.

Scything through the noise, the minefield of endless junk, hype and lies generated by clueless, narrow minded people and outright crooks, can be challenging for some, especially for some newcomers who have not done any preparatory work before getting their credit card out.

Also, determining what is and is not an opportunity is another issue.

But an investor doesnโ€™t need to scythe thorough the above, to make decisions, once they understand the actual and important factors that play a role in being successful in this game, some of which are constants, like it is with a lot of areas of commerce.

So an investor can simply ignore the junk, fluff, hype, lies, all the worthless extensions (which is 99.5% of them), laughable claims, fake experts and stratospheric lunatic predictions by those who are sans a crystal ball (and sometimes nefariously motivated) and just, stay, focused.

Stay focused.

Stay focused.

In the end, walking away either temporarily or permanently, is another option.

Are you in possession of a crystal ball or other future seeing mechanism, or are you just like the other 452,789 past baseless and flippant "predictors"?

If you want an established TLD with plenty of good names that have potential resell value still available, .is is a great option.

As a side note, I have often wondered whether the relative high prices of ccTLD extensions will find their way to the .com/.net/.org world?
If this were to happen, even if it happened over time/in stages, we would likely end up with a colossal reduction in the number of people holding domains, the number of domains held and which domains are held, which would nullify the issues the OP mentions.

A crystal ball will be useful ...
I'm simply analyzing the trend: .com is losing market share in favor of the others. Will the trend change? Who knows, but I will bet no.

One point in favor of .com is that is a cheap extension and there are no premium renewal fees.
Other TLDs price increase continuosly. For example on On January 15, 2026, the domains registry for .site .online .store .space .fun .website .tech .pw .host .press .uno will initiate universal price increases. These changes will affect renewal & registration & transfer.

What is the source of the data for your claimed "evolution"? Please provide the source.
Plus, how many other extensions make the "all other extensions" figure?

Why do you think the costs of the new TLDs registrations and renewals are so high?
Answer: because the registries know that these worthless extensions are destined to have a short lifespan and so the registries are making hay while the sun shines, coz it ain't gonna shine long for those extensions.

.com has been going for over 41 years and is still the most desirable extension, and the most desirable by a considerable margin.

You only have to look at the lengthy laundry list of worthless extensions that were previously heralded and shouted about, but which languish in the garbage bin of unwanted stuff of the goodwill store, to know where the current flavor of the month extensions will end up.

Most successful domainers are addicts. There are almost no other ways to do what is necessary to succeed in this business than to be addicted.

With addiction comes the need to say no even when you want to say yes.

Therein lies the challenge.

Have you seen the bureaucratic nightmare imposed by some of the ccTLD extensions, not to mention their burdensome requirements, security risks and various restrictions.

So, no, its not easy to buy such names and if anything, its getting harder to acquire those extensions and perhaps others.

I just found (Single) WORD + AI.com is still available, while there is a domainer who took the .xyz version and listed it for $XXX asking price, I don't know what it means or maybe the domainer is tired of the increasing number of extensions in the market.

The number of domains registered is not an opinion.
The .com TLD had 159.4 million registered domains.
Non-.com domains total 219.1 million (summing all the other 1500+ TLDs).
Source: https://www.dnib.com/articles/the-domain-name-industry-brief-q3-2025

The convenience of buying a .com domain for $3,000-$30,000-$300,000 or one of the other 1500 extensions for $30: this is an opinion

There is a significant difference between .com and all other extensions put together, which is value.

So while the raw number of non .com registrations is rising higher in that graph and in the link you provided for Q3 2025 shows a greater number of non .com names registered, that seems mostly to be because of the lack of availability of .com names, not because .com is losing its dominance.

The explosion of new extensions is the central cause and will likely continue to be the cause, of rising non-com extensions registrations, simply by raw numbers, as more and more extensions get invented. This is partly necessary to offset the collapse in the number of renewals for previously introduced extensions, which we see all the time.

Thus .com has not and will not lose its dominance, no matter what extensions are introduced.

Junk remains junk, however you dress it up.
