I'm not sure if I should invest in .mobi, to be honest I would rather pay the reg fee on a medium level .com domain then a good .mobi because I'm not sure if there is really a market for the domain extension, can someone prove me wrong or is the fact of .mobi being a small market still true?

I think the best things you can do to see if it is worth or not as follow :
- You can check sites like Sedo if there is offeres for this TLD Domain .
- You can also check .mobi sale prices history by this link DN Sale Price- Domain Name Sales Price and History

I’ve got only two .mobi names and they are for defensive purposes but I do believe that it has a bright future.

Is .mobi worth the reg fee?

depends on what is to the left of the dot. Same holds true for all extensions. According to pool.com, over 50,000 .com domains dropped tonight. Apparently investors in the mighty .com need to pay attention to what is to the left of the dot as well. [/sarcasm] All too often people reg some LookAtMyLame.mobi and when it doesn't sell they declare the extension sucks when the real problem is their choice of domain name, not domain extension.

The keywords still available aren't worth the regfee unless you have the matching .com and it is developed. Even then there are strong arguments against using .mobi, but the registry has gotten into the web design business to make the extension more appealing. That has bought them some time, but nothing domainers should care about.

99.9% of what I own is .com but I still hold a small handful 25-30 .mobi domains for the long shot, I only have mobis for things that I feel would be easy mobile applications like traffic, weather, sports scores, gambling, movie showtimes, etc... I don't think owning any old word in a mobi makes as much sense.

Defensive purposes by that do you mean, registering all the extensions of th domain to avoid someone taking them?
I hope .mobi does have a bright future I feel sorry for people that landrush into a new extension spend 1k and then find out the extension is worthless

Sounds like you are a serious domainer and maybe this is the way to go, just go for some serious keywords and leave abstract domains in the dust

Back when .mobi first came out my mind just thought what is something you would wanna check on your mobile quick when your out and that is when I thought traffic, weather, sports scores, gambling, stocks, movie showtimes, real estate etc... so I grabbed 25-30 that made sense. Now you turn on the tv and every other commercial is 3G or 4G so the mobile internet keeps improving so I guess it opens all categories up to .mobi but I still feel keywords that could relate to mobile applications will be stronger. I have owned my batch for a few years now and since it's a long shot and I don't own too many I'll keep renewing them until I see for sure how it pans out. If .mobi does turn into something strong I think I have a few gems, if not it was a small loss. Like throwing $100 to win on the horse with a sore leg might not pan out but if it does jackpot. I own mainly .com but I do have a few very strong .mobi and .us as a little speculation here and there doesn't hurt.

I thought mobi's were a waste of time.

All of a sudden along comes my brother who's in the network business... and he keeps sending me links to articles that he has that are ALL dot Mobi.

I'm beginning to wonder.... I don't know if he gets redirected there from the main site. Primarily it's mobiletimes.mobi
