I believe that .com extension is still the king but some members here on Namepros argue that that is no longer the case today.

Yes it's still the king, and likely to remain so for the forseeable future because the general public are not even generally aware of .net, .org, .us. Now we give them all these new GTLDs. The main buyer of which are domainers, not end-users.

I believe the answer to this is obvious. 1 month into 2015 and look at these numbers:

360.com - $17,000,000
Porno.com - $8,888,888
345.com - $800,000
Homecare.com - $350,000
Connaught.com - $250,000
Ignite.com - $112,000

No matter what the argument is, 80/20 rule can mean the best of both worlds, and that's how I'm investing: 80% .COMs, 20% gTLDs, but only a handful of them I think will be useful.

Yes, .com have always been and will be for many years to come. It is something like the popular cliche phrase "You don't reinvent the wheel".

The new gTLDs are like the planes and helicopters that flies. New breed, still useful in other ways. But no matter what, .coms and all other new gTLDs compliments each other well.

So yes, .com is still the most valuable extension

I prefer the term "potentate".

Some members here on Namepros should be involuntarily committed.

Anyway, I think I can honestly say that I will never, and will never see the need to, register a "new" gTLD. They are not necessary and they never were necessary. It's one of the biggest cons to reach the internet.

No doubt. People would not fully embrace anything else anytime soon.

The first thing you will see are price drops and sales on the new gtlds.. Rightside has already started doing this. Then drops, not many large portfolio owners can afford to renew portfolios of "premium" names at those prices indefinitely.. remember some are as high as 60k/yr.. but even for the more reasonable premiums.. say $79/yr that equals:

250 names X $79 = $19,750
250 .coms X $8.50 = $2,125

This is just one random example, but try going out and selling a whatever.whatever to an end user.. their first reaction will probably be.. a .what and it costs how much per year? Look at how many more .coms you can invest in for the same price.. and they are tried and true.

I think .com is still the king and it is going to be so for a long time because the end use of any domain is development and the general public recognize .com more than any other extension.

If a site is built on any other extension, there is always a chance of losing traffic & potential customers to the .com version. So, most end users who can afford premium prices would usually prefer to buy .com over other extensions which would in turn keep the prices of .com always above others.

.com is king on a global scale, on local markets it depends from country to country it's either the .com or the ccTLD running those shows.

.com is the king.

Dont expect to see 7 figure sales for .whatever.

keyword.com = one word
KeywordWhatever.com = Readable brandable.
Keyword.whatever = Hard to read brandable.

All good points and I totally agree with all of you.

Just to add some spice to this thread, let's introduce this hypothetical question that I occasionally see in forums and other domaining-related websites:

Which is better, creditcardsforyouandmeandeverybody.com or creditcards.xyz?

.com still rules, if you have a business which you are targeting internationally. so it becomes more helpful for your business to rank higher in the SERP. but if you want to target only any specific country then you may go with any domain. but still you can check the prices of domain available in .com they have more demand and are not available at cheap prices

Those questions are set up to guide the respondent to the agenda of the person asking the question, pollsters are masters at this. You just keep manipulating the words til you get what you want.

Since a registry is going to deem creditcards.whatever a premium, so the correct answer would be go find a two word credit related .com.

You are never going to rank for your creditcards.whatever name anyway without a lot of money for SEO/SEM.

Exactly, and this is why the markets where the local ccTLD is prefered over .com, will not be eager to adopt new extensions either.
It's a .com or ccTLD worldโ„ข :)

I think .com is the king and it will be for a quite long time.
Other good / specific / well recognized extensions are the country cctld and .org that is synonym to no profit etc.
You have to ask yourself what does the public know about domains and internet? .com
The new cctld together with domain hacks are domainers' virtuosity. Even delicio.us had to change their name into delicious.com because people just couldn't get it...
Thinking that the new cctlds are something else but a get rich quick scheme for registrars.
In a few years we will see a tiny fraction of them succeeding and a huge number of domainers broke

Just the thought of other TLDs overtaking dot com makes me cringe. That would be a total disaster if that happens.

Do you mean to say new gTLDs?

Personally I think the thing to worry about is that in 20 years all these conversations will be considered but a bit of nostalgia, like 10MB home computer systems are today.

.COM will always be king, in some ways, having all these new tlds just strengthens .com imo

You are not comparing apples with apples here. 1) A 34 char left of the dot .com with a 11 char left of the dot .xyz, and 2) a great right of the dot .com with a crappy (for credit cards at least) .xyz. As @equity78 suggests, you'd be better off going for a shorter .com. The first thing you will notice, is you won't be paying premium prices for the renewals.
