I admit it, I am a noob to this business but I am learning.
Before this i played somwhat actively in shares business (of course not my full time business) attracted by hype created by fool.com & other tons of tips' sites.
Anyways long story short, what I learnt about stock trading: there are ppl who made a ton, there are ppl who lost their shirts.
Same way, I am feeling an inkling that my adventure will also not be in fruitful waves.
I would like to see replies of members who made a TON of profit, or just a decent profit or even loss. Need not post your exact numbers, just an approx % ROI will be good enough.

In my situation.....

In the past year or so I spent about $1000....mostly in domains and just a bit in hosting.

I sold one domain name.....
I bought it for reg fee at godaddy and sold it for about $300 and that is all.

...the main thing is that it took me till now to figure out that most of the domains I bought are worth, only, what I paid for them and like any other investment there is a learning process that is requiered.

But that is just my experience....I am sure you will get many different experiences from others.

-Thank you for your time.

Is Domainer profitable, Yes. In many ways. I buy and sell domain names as well as dip into development of concepts and ideas. However for example this is my experience in January of this month. (I do this as a side business, growing my portfolio). I picked up 2 dropped domain names at registration fees (.com and .info) I sold the .com for $120 (within 72 hours) and I sold the .info for $175 (within 24 hours).

I also am in Escrow for a domain that I bought in Sept for $120 - the escrow is for $3050. The issue here is timing and recognizing value. How long has it taken to recognize value? A while. Many of my initial regs were poor decisions and TM's. After learning the business and being on the forums, you can pick up enough knowledge to make this a full time job if you speak.

If your curious about domain sales as well (besides those huge ones, like Sex.com and Diamond.com - you should check out NameBio.com - It has a database of 13,000+ domain sales and it updates daily.

its profitable only when you do your research on industry trends, tech, science, travel, www, etc...

dont just jump in and buy a set of names...

when i got invloved, i did my part of research... at that time gambling was on the rise...so i bought 10 names, and now own over 800+.... all these domains were possible to own from one single sale... which i used the revenue to purchase more names, the 2nd sale i had to me to the xx xxx ... all this profit with a $70 start...

the point is, jump into the game.... once you know the market for the next 5-10 years.... one advice... start your portfolio with .mobi, its the future... you will not find any .com names that will have a great value... unless you have the money to purchase names from other brokers..which is a good way to build a great generic portfolio which in time will only gain value... a name you buy for 10K+ today has the pottential of greater value in 5 years... xxx xxx....

a friend of mine bought a generic .com for 60K and sold it 4 years later for mid xxx xxxx.

2nd advice, 33% of online users are asian, so know your asian market as well as UK, USA.

In my first month of domaining I registered a poker domain and sold it for $200 on sedo, after that it went cold for awhile as I was just starting to get my feet wet. It can take some time but to answer your question directly, NO; would be my emphatic answer.

You really should continue to ask questions and gain knowledge but consider yourself luck because you have joined the most knowledgeable and responsive domain name community in the world.

Best wishes,
Kimmy
