For the US market, .Com is the only way to go, imo....and, also, not a small number of businesses based elsewhere in the world use the .Com, as well, because they see it as the 'global' extension.
.Com is as good an investment - or better - than any.
But, ccTLD's can do quite well in their respective countries, too...Businesses like to trade in their own local market using their country's ccTLD.
Currently, UK, Europe, and US are all suffering various kinds of recession, or tougher times. So, the domain market (like in the US) is slow.
...But every cycle turns. Good buying today could offer you great returns in times ahead....But, you need to be prepared to wait for those returns, imo.
