Well honestly any keyword in any extension could potentially have value and be sold for a profit. Now having top keywords certainly enhances your chances of getting a better return on investment. I think it would be much like purchasing a scratch off ticket and not scratching it off for a while.....could be a winner and profits.....or kill you with renewal fees

Same can be said about any keyword/extension...in the domain game there is nothing that's 100%.....besides having to spend money to make money!

Unless it is a really obscure extension with a very high renewal fee a keyword like "Sex" has value in pretty much any TLD.

I've been thinking some about this lately. Let's take a domain like sex.info or sex.net, how much type in do they get? I understand that sex.com get's alot, but other extensions?

Without the type in, what's the real value? It's a nightmare to rank for the search term "sex", with or without the exact domain.

What do you think?

Unless you have a top tier generic .COM you are not generally going to get a lot of type in traffic.

The value of alternate extensions can be anything from branding, memorability, credibility, etc.

Many end users prefer top tier keywords in credible secondary extensions over mediocre .COM, as mediocre .COM rarely get enough type in to matter anyway.

If you look at reported sales for sex.cctld, casino.cctld or poker.cctld (the so-called keywords with value in any TLD) you'll see nearly all are parked/undeveloped. The rest are blogs or low key websites.

Nothing surprising really, if you consider the poker/casino theme the big players are already branded and I do not imagine an established player like Bwin promoting an oddball name like poker.vg or .whatever.

Bottom line: keywords in obscure extensions are gadgets for domainers. They have 'value' as long as you can flip them to another domainer but imo they belong to the collectors item category. You can't really build a serious business on them.

You also have to remember that the more obscure the extension gets the more the price to register goes up, and like the list shown above the sell price goes down.

So rather than it being a good idea strapping a rocket to your back in order to get a jump on the crowd you have to figure that it never did the coyote any favours so stop and think first

If your registration fees are $900 a year and you can only sell something for $500 there is little point in having it...
