This will never pass... And I think it's completely underhanded that they do this type of thing. This is what you see on TV all the time where some candidate claims his opposition voted against increased funding to public schools... Yet they don't mention that the bill also had a rider that called for reductions in senior healthcare or some such crap like that. You really can't trust anything you hear from a politician without researching the matter further.

Very sound advice, but for the lazy amongst us, don't bother with the research, just assume they're lying or at least heavily bending the truth, you will be right 99.9% of the time anyway and have a whole lot more time available to pursue your domain addiction :)

They've got us where they want us. They've frightened us into believing that if you don't vote for one of the the two (identical) parties then we're just throwing away our votes.

I've never voted in my life and I refuse to do so until the 2 party system breaks down... And I actually went to college for political science, so it's not like I am ignorant on the topic, as most people assume. "Oh you don't vote?!?! you must be lazy or ignorant!"

Too late. It's already passed, both chambers, very late last night, and on its way to Bush's desk. I'm surprised, frankly, but that's how it is.

So what would this ban encompass?

It would prohibit gambling businesses from accepting credit card or bank transfers to fund online wagering. It also would prohibit credit card companies and banks from transmitting electronic payments for the purpose of online wagering. UNLESS you are wagering on horses (can you smell the lobbying exemption, people?) -- but any other sort of online games of chance... lotteries, poker, craps, slots etc. ... would fall under the new law.

I should point out that it contains no penalties or prohibitions on actually *wagering* for individuals, so really it's pretty useless (where there's demand supply will follow). But it does make it potentially a lot more difficult to get your wagering accounts funded -- again, unless you're wagering on horses.

Yep, dgridley's right. The Republican leadership put it in this bill late Friday night because they knew it would be difficult for those who have been holding up the gambling prohibitions to vote against a bill bolstering port security. This sort of thing happens a lot more often than you might think.

What is/will be the effect of this, if any, on U.S. citiziens that are affiliates w/ online gaming companies? (I'm talking about the legal standpoint here; obviously it will hurt profit)

If I'm not mistaken, it was already illegal for US citizens to gamble online.. this bill makes it harder to fund online gambling.

I'm not sure of the legality of affiliate's but it's certainly a fine line.

It will kill it. All the major companies that "fund" this type of thing, AMEX, paypal, VISA etc are based in the US. It's going to make "funding" for online gamblers very difficult.

It's had a huge effect on the online gambling companies listed on the sharemarket in AUS with a number halving in value today.

There's something almost amusing about this given the 2nd amendment....

yeh it looks like they are getting serious lol but what i think will happen is they will find a way to regulate it and get tax money from it and then make it legal again

 This is plainly a result of lobbyists.. George may have signed it, but he didn't write the bill..

It's all about dollars and cents tho..

Don't get too worried yet.

The online gambling industry is worth $6billion and the big boys aren't going to give up this easily.

There are always ways of getting around new legislation, and it will happen.

This is an ideal time to invest in gambling shares. Many of the big players have been hanging on which is a good sign.

It already passed as of yesterday 10/02/06 and all it needs to become law is the president' signature, which is expected to go thru without any problems.

Most credit card companies, or banks already refused to fund accounts such as party poker. Nothing will stop people from funding their moneybookers and loading up their party poker accounts.

PP will be legal obligated to stop American Gambling on their

site or face criminal prosecution. They said they would comply.

As we all agree, poker.com; casino.com, ...etc are some of the greatest and valuable gambling domains to own, but don't you think this new law will greatly impact their value?
The majority of the bigest domain buyers and company investors are from the US and owning a domain like above ones that you can not develop into a real time portal website for people to gamble online is a loss!
