Google Inc. launched a search engine in China on Wednesday that censors material about human rights, Tibet and other topics sensitive to Beijing _ defending the move as a trade-off granting Chinese greater access to other information.

"Within minutes of the launch of the new site bearing China's Web suffix ".cn," searches for the banned Falun Gong spiritual movement showed scores of sites omitted and users directed to articles condemning the group posted on Chinese government Web sites.

Searches for other sensitive subjects such as exiled Tibetan leader the Dalai Lama, Taiwan independence, and terms such as "democracy" and "human rights" yielded similar results.

In most such cases, only official Chinese government sites or those with a ".cn" suffix were included. "

What a load of crap.
I would have more respect for them if they just told the truth that it is the only way they can make money off the Chinese that the Communist government will allow.

They are whoring themselves out and don't really care that they are contributing to the Chinese propaganda machine.

Sounds very much like what Yahoo did. I'm not quite sure why companies like Yahoo and Google are cow towing to a facist-like government with an abysmal record on human rights. But then again, while certainly not even close to as bad as China, the USA government's record on human rights has been blemished within the past 3 years.

I say this sword has sharp edges on both sides. How do we repsond to the fact that in some arab countries and may be even in China, you can not access sites that contain words like 'sex' or 'porn'. Some countries like Dubai wont even allow you to download any file that ends in .avi and stuff like that. Now thats good in my opinion. It may not work 100% effectively but they are doing their best to curb pornography on Internet.

On the other hand, they are trying to curb some social elements too, which is bad.

In history, again and again, we are always at difficult position to draw a line between good and spill overs into bad.

IMHO, often times, the party that has the power gets the final word and here it could be the chinese government. It may sound really bad in North America, but hey, how many problems are n't here that governemnt can not even move one inch forward in curbing. Prime example "child pornography".

Just my 2 cents.

if you want an interesting read on this and for those of you into investment banking read here http://www.internetoutsider.com/2006/01/google_makes_ri.html

Google had no option but to do this... it's not a communist company and it's nothing to do about "doing no evil". They have shareholders and they HAVE to have presence in China...

as Henry points out in the article IBM helped Nazis track down Jews yet is considered an amazing company with heritage and ethics...

Thought google.com.cn was like that long time ago.
Anyways ppl in China don't seem to like google, most of them use baidu.com

These arguments are a load of crap. If you don't like it, don't do business with them. That simple. Any business going in to any country has to follow their laws.

It's our countries that continue to do business with them, this is not going to change. America is a huge trading partner with China. Why aren't you writing a petition to the US, or writing a story about our governments direct involvement? It is us that continues to allow this, not just google.

Googles just lookin for a new market, theyre not launching a revolution on chinese censorship.

I agree with you. You can't judge other countries's practice with you own value.

You honestly believe that? More than just a little naive/isolationist...

Hard to read any of this and honestly believe that you can't "judge other countries's practice" [sic]

If you judged them by their own values, you would agree with what they were doing. If I judged the USA government with the values of those who are running the government, I would never have anything bad to say about them...

I hope people can see the danger in the logic stated by others above.

China is such a small market, too. IMHO it won't be very profitable.

:talk: Before anyone tries to call me out - its sarcasm - and Google is in it for the money.

If you want to do business with someone in your own country, its called give and take, you barter (for the most part) and then come to terms. Terms were agreed upon here, and that's that.

Okay, here is another way. For every penny this forum makes from google adsense it is their direct involvment with these practices. You are directly contributing by being a member here.

That's absolute trash. That's like saying you were a murder accomplice because you and the murderer both used Windows.

I doubt google is powerful enough to challenge the Chinese government. Its market share ain't big in China, and the Chinese government can block it whenever it chooses to. To succeed, it gotta follow the rules.

thats not their faults tho. They have to follow chinese laws and regulations or they wouldnt be able to use googles service period

Exactly^, i agree with Google & their desicision to block some results...

It has nothing to do with communism on the part of google. Google already had thier reslts censored by the government and in many cases banned. This in turn restricted the average chinese access to much of the internet, by self regulating google opens up huge sections of the internet that were previously blocked.

On the one hand, I think Google is helping to repress a couple billion people by voluntarily filtering results. On the other, every single U.S. company is importing products from China, which is also helping China maintain a status quo politically.

I believe that if you want to do business in another country, you have to respect their laws and culture. Any business that goes overseas is subject to that countries laws....it shouldn't be different here.

Besides, who are we to preach about civil liberties and human rights when our civil liberties are threatened , and the human rights of innocent civilians overseas are violated for the sake of 'defeating terrorisim'?

While many criticise google for making a business decision, they still wear clothes, buy products, and benefit from things made in China.

China's been around a little bit longer than the States, in my opinion, when things like this happen, the best we can do is exercise tolerance....even if the west is 100 years ahead in the field of civil liberties (*cough* ).
