Is is even worth doing SEO on a .info domain name? Does search engines like .com names better?

yes it's worth it. search engines might like .com better for now (until .info prices go up), but it's not by any appreciable amount in my opinion.

.infos recently got the beating. But yet you have to prove your point to the search engines that your site is not spammy one.

Now due to this .info scenario many people will stay away from buying the .infos and thus the .infos will slowly start moving down.

If you already have a .info domain and are serious about it then the search engines are not just banning them for fun. You have to prove that your site is worthwhile of getting into the index. Which you can prove by unique and relevant content as well as good backlinks from other sites in that niche.
