I'm not sure if this has been asked before, since I couldn't find a thread on this, but-

Are .info domains worth anything, especially since they were giving them out for free? I would imagine that fact would affect their value...

What do all think the future holds for .info's?

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.

The only three domains I have are .infos (see my signature)

No-one is really interested in them, and I don't really see any potential for them.

They are great if you want a cheap site though, you can get a decent .info domain for a fraction of the price .coms are worth. I bought all three of mine for about a dollar together!!!

Yes, .infos have value and that value will increase.

In my opinion, last fall's barrage of .info givaways was THE greatest marketing stunt in domain industry ever. They will all have to be renewed next year (many will drop though). Even if only 10% will actually get renewed, it will pay off handsomely for .info registrars.

Next fall - watch out for some good .info drops!

Thanks for your quick reply, PoorDoggie!

I guess .info is not the way to go if you're looking to make money.... :]

Value has nothing to do with being given away free. The best .COMs were give away free right up to 1995. You just had to apply and specify your nameserver. In those days, who ever heard of "nameservers". Looks like a long time ago, but the history of the World Wide Web is extremely short.

The best keywords for .INFO were taken out a long time ago. These will continue to grow in value.

The left overs after 2 years were what was given away. BIG difference.

I think .info will come into it's own, but it's a long term investment. It is good though for making a page or two site out of it for links and banners that can make you money, but the short term sales outlook probably won't get you much.

Yes, by long term, you are talking 2010 and beyond, just about 10 years of holding power.

Wow- there are lots of ways to look at this! It all makes sense.

Thanks everyone- I don't feel so :bah: about .info's anymore...

Just like all these other speculative TLD's (e.g. .CC, .TV, .CN), the key will be in development. Sure, the most powerful keywords will do well regardless, but other less popular keyword .INFO have a chance if people start doing some serious developing in the .INFO name space.

I have been able to generate some great traffic from this one-page-wonder website:

www.WSJPrimeRate.info

Ranks well in M-S_N for a highly specific, finance related niche keyphrase "WSJ Prime Rate"

So: let's get those .INFO's developed!

Shall we do a .INFO roll call?

I position .info domain right after .com and .net.
I see them a 3rd in value.

Around 90 temporary sites developed and growing and several thousands made all from "worthless" free info's.

InfoFan checking in

An InfoFan is one who believes that there is a long term future for the name space and works to develop/promote websites which provide INFORMATION.

There are some great developed sites floating around out there. Many California state and local websites are .info's.

One of my ongoing projects is www.VanBriggle.info (currently redirects to .net but going to drop the .net), www.TecoPottery.info, www.DenverWhite.info and about to start on HandicapVans .info.

I recently stumbled across the www.safrica.info developed site

There are still many names which fit the extension available but as stated above be prepaired to develop and/or hang in for the long term. Not a place to look for quick profits.
