well, i am about 2 months into learning web design and it seems to be coming along. at the advice of this forum, i learned to code by hand via html, mostly xhtml, and some css. i use a wyswyg editor most of the time (dreamweaver)just until i get where i want to be....

www.greatwineopen.com

still has a primitive look in my mind....
should i add a border around the entire set up?
is it too busy?

It scrolls horizontally on a 1024x768 moniter, and the majority of the people online use 800x600 or 1024x768.

Other than that, its good for someone who has just started

Yes, for a beginner it's pretty good.

There are 3 menus and 1 extra menu. I'd cut it down to one or two. Also, don't link your header to your contact page, link it to the index page instead.

I agree, good first website. The scrolling is because of all the spaces (ย ย ย ย ย  ) in the bottom table cell. If you remove that it fits nicely.

Good luck.

First of all the background need to be change, the logo need to be change, the navigation should be only one, and it should organize into sub menu if you have too many items under navigation menu. The resolution of the site need to be smaller. Links in the navigation menu should be light up somehow when mouse hover over (in my opinion it's better that way).

You should take a look at this http://www.mezzoblue.com/zengarden/alldesigns/ for creative sparks.

okay... realy starting to 'clean' it up.... just starting to understand the need for a cleaner look... also the fact that i started with frontpage doesnt help... it makes the code really weirdo compared to dremweavers coding view... should i go through and delete all of the frontpage 'extras' in the code? will it hurt the product?
i guess sometimes less is more when designing a site.
please keep the critique going, it helps.

Someone check my code please... what is all of those nbsp tags?
more garbage that frontpage left in there?
dreamweaver's 'fix html' isnt getting rid of it, just want to know if its safe to delete, or is it necessary?

Well, not bad for a firsr step, but definitely needs improvement. I recommend you to get rid of the moving lines, then change the red colour on the blue background, it really hurts my eyes.
And why have you chosen the black backround for ads by Goooogle?
The central part of the page should be reorganized somehow to make it neater. Hope I've helped.

you guys keep commenting, and i keep adjusting...
thank you for all the feedback... i have to say, i have taught myself about wine, i have taught myself a foreign language, and numerous other things, and web design is by far the hardest.

trying to get that 'universal fit' for all monitors is tough as well.... i always get that horizontal scroll if i mess with sizing too much...
