correct me if im wrong...

i tried to 'backdoor' build websites by using frontpage and a little dreamweaver and it just isnt cutting it. they seem to be primitive compared to what i am looking for. the only thing i seem to be learning is that i need to:
learn html and css cold.
then xhtml?
then ..... ?
and then learn dreamweaver and flash.
only in this order. shortcuts get you no where in this realm, no?

Depends of what kind of sites you wanna build. For simple ones you don't need anything more than DW.

Here is how I would learn:

  1. HTML (coding by hand)
  2. CSS
  3. XHTML
  4. PHP
  5. MySQL
  6. AJAX or Flash

HTML is fine... Also, you should learn a graphics program such as Adobe Photoshop.. Tutorials at www.zymic.com .. There how most sites are done unless you want backend scripts..

All websites are created in HTML, others are just backend scripts to create backend operations.

CSS - Cascading Style Sheet.. You dont have to use them because you can format the same stuff in HTML. Also different browsers process this different. However, can use this if you like to edit the site fast.

XHTML - Extesible Hypertext Markup Language... Lets just say you can avoid using this if you are going to use CSS. Also, this can can be used for Ajax style programming.

PHP - Hypertext Preprocessor.. Great serverside language.. perfect for doing all backend work. Dont need this unless you are doing forms, connecting to a database, retrieving information, queries and what not. Really easy to learn..

mySQL - Just a database... Can be connected to by PHP, ASP, Perl, JavaScript, and more. Used to store data.

AJAX - Asypheric JavaScript and XML ? (Spelling) .. THis is what basically makes a more unque and user interface. Web 2.0 and what not. Requeries serverside scripting such as PHP, ASP, or even Perl.

Those programs are nice for little personal sites, but when your making a site to make money, you need to have it very professional. I would learn the following languages in order:

HTML
CSS
PHP/MySQL
AJAX
Flash

I've never really liked xHTML.

HTML is going to be completely replace by XHTML one day. I suggest pick up on xhtml because it's basically the same thing as html, but more strict in pair tags and whatever else... why xhtml? People now a day not only surf the internet using normal web browsers such as ie7 or firefox, but they also surf the internet using many other user agents such as PDA, and etc.. html sometime cannot be use to its full capacity because the user agents won't understand or won't have the ability (memory) to render the html page, so xhtml is another way to describe the contents better.

JAVA Script is also another good nifty to learn.

Flash is also very cool for your webpages, but do not overload flash, and you got yourself an attractive website.

Am I right in saying users who use Linux as there operating system cannot view flash?

not true.... flash is compatible to be viewed on linux.. its just hard to install

Hm.. Ok, I was using Linux for a few weeks and could not get flash to work, ever since then I have not used flash in my sites, especially for navigation.

flash is one version behide for linux (but i here macromedia is working on that). it almost seems like they make flash work for mac and windows and then linux. But overall linux can view flash just fine just not the newest version. Also scribby and templaterave , depending on which linux you use it's quite simple to install flash using synaptic (or its alternate) which is just a gui program which list available program for install and then installs it and what it depends on for you.Java is the brat to install but with a little luck is pretty easy also

ajax is asynchronous xml and javascript (and that just off the top of my head)

My advice (which is expert i know 13 web languages alone (not including db's)) is to find a nice tutorilal for html(by hand )it's just like writing a letter.
from there go on a as needed basis .and what i mean by that is if you want your page to do something cool then research what can do it(ask here) and then learn that language.

html can take a week max to learn and css will take a day or so just keep a reference handy (www.w3schools.com , My Friend :) ) also dont confuse ajax as a language it's not its just a way to utilize a couple existing one together.
