The way I see it - this phone makes browsing the net and seeing
any site you want a lot easier so there is no real need for cut down
viewing of the internet. So the way I see it this means people will happily
browse their traditional .com's and no real need to go to cut down .mobi sites.
if this is the future and I think it is it means a lot of .mobi domains are gonna
end up pretty worthless...

well the way i see it, if every site you went to you had to navigate like you were viewing a map on google earth - zoom in, zoom in again, no thats not what i wanted to see, zoom out zoom out again, now lets navigate over to here - it's going to get real old real fast. and how will linking work? wont you accidentally be hitting links on the page when you try to zoom in and out? will it take time to load the new view? will banners and graphics load quickly, eat up data download packages?

i think until i actually see one of these up close and in action the jury is still out.

During the keynote address, Steve Jobs was happily browsing .com sites on his iPhone...

.mobi will be fine. I've been reading comments on Digg, etc and it seems like people thing zooming in to read text is a pain.

More complaints than anything right now about the phone, but I think its pretty good lookin' myself.

riggghhht, i'm sure he was just randomly browsing - some site will load nicely i'm sure, but some will just be a pain in the butt

I have used many PPC/PALM/SMART phones, the best for website browsing is Nokia 9300/9500 series. Why? The wide screen. It is even more comfortable than HP HX4700's VGA screen.

However, I believe no one would like to always take a brick in pocket, so the small sized phone will still be the most popular trends. From this point of view, .mobi is meaningful.

However, IMO, .mobi will definitely go strong, but won't take off as many people expected. It is a useful and effective way for get some tasks done or receiving infomation on the way, but won't become the indispensables in our daily life, just simply because the screen size. Though we may get very low cost for mobile online and long life battery support in the future.

Technology changed daily, but the size of our hands and the sight of our eye never changed.

If anybody here has used AvantGo for the PDA, you will know what I mean by this.

Internet browsing as we know it on the phone, by itself, will take years and years to take off. Services like AvantGo sucessfully are able to take data from an existing site and aggregate it into a propietary format, which is output to the screen in a resolution that actually looks good. Sure, it is a pain to have to go through their software. Sure, it is a pain to have to wait the extra 10 seconds to get the formatting and aggregation done. But in the end, for usability, it is worth it.

IMO .mobi is a huge gimic and loads of speculators and resellers making $$$$ by selling these .mobi
Thats why I got this one Crappy.mobi .... :)
Anyway I guess someone will find the script to change the websites from PC format to
Phone format with no need of changing the extention.

iPhone will have very small market and will definetely not be a big thing, as ther is NOTHING new with that phone.
Jobs just catches up what nearly all other mobile manufactures did 2 years ago.
And in the high-end phone market there is still some money to make and he wants a part of the nearly distributed pie.

Concerning .mobi VS .com.
Its the same story, as displays for everyday mobile user will hardly increase in size there is the need for optimized pages.
Hence .mobi is the choice due to the page restrictions.

But as always...
What will be in 2-3 years (when mobi will take off) is uncertain.
--> Choose your .mobi name investments wisely ;)

.mobi is facing a race against time. Can they establish themselves before regular .com websites will work on most mobile phones (either because most website owners make their sites mobile-compatible, or because technology catches up and allows phone users to display regular full-featured websites on their phones).

I guess a lot will depend on the relationships dotMobi establishes with cell phone carriers and manufacturers (Apple's competitors). Many things can happen in 5 months until the iPhone actually launches.

I just watched the whole iphone presentation. Pretty incredible phone imo and .mobi looks like it will be useless unless t-mobile or the other big guys start to promote it quickly with an even better phone.

I'm for .mobi, but slightly worried after watching the presentation.

Worse comes to worse, the iphone is due to launch in asia in 2008.

I have i-phone.in :)

Good point ... not that I've ever been a "bull", by any stretch, of the .MOBI, but this is about the most bearish I've felt since the extension's introduction, IMHO. I am increasingly as unsure that the consortium and so-called "backers" of the .MOBI can get ahead (heck, even out of the gate!) in this race, as I am sure that the BiG :$: .COM sites won't just sit still and permit .MOBI to capture the eyeballs of the mobile web ... the math just does NOT add up, in my view. :|

As in the Signature below, I've scrapped my development plans for my one .MOBI ... perhaps the iPhone broke my camel's back? :red:

Time will tell, of course ... and just my two sense.

I think that many are just looking at .mobi the wrong way. People, it's not the second coming of Christ.

Does that mean it won't be successful, useful, or valuable? I don't think so. Personally, I think that continually zooming in/out would be quite annoying. I like to surf the web with ease. That's where .mobi comes into play. If developers create nice, appealing .mobi sites, I believe that mobile users will appreciate .mobi since they will know what to expect (an easy-to-use site) before they even get there. The problem with simply resizing .com sites automatically is, as we've seen, the fact that many sites look extremely ugly, crowded, and unappealing when resized by the browser.

Nonetheless, the fact remains that no one knows what the future holds- if you have faith in the extension, then by all means invest in it and support it by developing nice .mobi sites. Just be careful that you don't get carried away with it all, and think things through reasonably before you jump in and buy a name. I've seen an incredible amount of .mobi's that are simply not worth registering...even in .com! Folks, remember that typing an address into a cell phone is not as easy as doing it on a keyboard. Short 'n sweet just might be the key with .mobi, who knows?

And finally, for those who don't think that .mobi has much potential...don't spend your money on it; go invest in other areas that you believe could lead to better profits.

Great and most reasonable post and advice, Egnited! Thank you, Sir. :tu:
I appreciate your calm & candor ...

Until I see the referenced consortium and "backers" invest their time and money, my money and time - instead of developing my one .MOBI - is better spent on finding .COM domains that I can profit from in the near-term, augment my letters and marketings to End users, and continue with my other extensioned developments for the long-term, IMHO. :gl: :talk:

All the best!

.Mobi can of course adapt as well. The extension has been created and wont go away. So if the .Mobi compatible thing is going to limit .Mobi's success because of device technology making it obsolete then I believe .Mobi should become just another normal tld such as .com. It will still have the Mobile connotation and will give companies and other interested parties who dont have a .com or .net the oppertunity to get a website with a well-known and popular extension.

I don't think iphone will affect .mobi, but since many people don't believe in .mobi and there could be a new technology in the future to solve the problem, so long term prospect of .mobi is uncertain anyway (of course a lot of people sold .mobi name for high value profit)

I also don't think iPhone will impact .mobi - because it was dead on arrival. It depended on phone vendors pushing their browsers that would presumably direct type-in traffic to .MOBI sites by default. But phone vendors have never been good at forcing people to use their second-rate browsers, and it's only getting easier to use "real" browsers on handheld devices. Why bother with .MOBI?
