.tv I'm seeing a lot of "bad" .TV names being reg'd...

O.k... Reality check everyone. This thread will be your wake up call.

If the .TV domain your thinking about registering doesn't have a .com equivalent showing up in OVT, then I'd pass on the name.

Now it's true most of these domains could sell for at or above reg fee so no one (for the most part) will be out any money, but please realize your time is worth something.

If you want to maximize your time and subsequently future wealth don't buy crap. Save your money up to get something decent, or as I stated earlier find a .com equivalent in OVT that can still be had for reg fee at Godaddy.

Just think about it: Only the type-in names or ones that truly fit the .tv extension will be able to command any kind of price. If you think otherwise because .TV is coming online and "everyone" will want a .TV name you'll be disappointed I'm afraid. Heck, there are "decent" .com names that sell for under a few hundred, and .com literally owns the internet. The same will be true for .TV and maybe even less so since .com will "migrate" to the television circuit giving ".TV" some competition.

Hope this doesn't offend anyone. Obviously we've seen some very good .TV names, but anymore lately we've seen the "I just bought "x"...what do you think?" You're better off saving the $34 to put towards a real "$x,xxx" .TV name when you can then just come on here to say, "Hey, I bought "X" ... Can't believe I got it!"

Bad is in the beholder, I guess: there's just as many crappy dot coms available as there are crappy dot tvs.... I've got enough dot coms in my pocket, thank you, and more than a few .nets, .us, even some .in domains.

there are dot coms that have sold well that I have felt aren't worth squat, and I'm sure the same will be true with other tlds..... If a great keyword helps get you to the top of the search engines, who cares if it is a .tv or .com?

.com is useful for type-ins, sure, but that has more relevance for domains that you do not intend to develop.

I once thought this too... Then I did some research. You should know "Key words" in a url don't have any more weight to a search placement then linkage to your site or even the way the links are worded on your site.

Keyword domains do have a lot of importance outside of the "SEO" argument, in that they can be easier to remember. This is helpful in advertisement phase of your launch.

Keep in mind, I'm not putting down the .tv extension, rather I'm pointing out that it seems as if "just any name" is being reg'd in the .TV extension lately. My suggestion is to not do this when there are some very good names still available to reg. In a sense, my humble suggestion is to go after those .tv domains using the criteria I laid out (check .com equivalent in OVT). I'd also check Google, for "Your Name TV".

The alternative is to not heed my advice, and continue to reg .TV names until you have 1000 of them. 950 of which will most likely expire next year. If you don't think this can happen. Just ask yourself how many times this has happen to you...

I agree with you partly however there is some names that will just sell based on the name.......

Generic, one worders. In some cases, two worders that flow with .TV like butter.

I know this argument sounds familiar (think .com), but some things don't change.

I guess one must ask themselves.... "If I were able to go back to 1990 and knowing what I know now. What dot com names would I buy?"
I hope you wouldn't buy "www.wakeup.TV or "familyphysician.TV" or some crap like that.

It's true that a lot of the good .TV real estate has been taken, but the prices to acquire names you want from other people or dot TV would be relatively cheap compared to what prices will be in 2008 or 09. Does this not seem like De Ja vu?

My last comments. There are probably still some gems that are available for $34 (or whatever coupon price) at Godaddy. These names become even more valuable if you do get a REALLY GOOD one (fitting my criteria OVT/Yourname TV in Google) through Godaddy. Reason: Your yearly costs are low, and resale should be higher because you own property no one else does. Technically if you buy through Dot TV you are paying the landlord significantly higher rental prices. Transfer costs are higher.

Even still. If I had a choiceto buy a good name through Godaddy or a great name through Dot TV. I hedge my bets and buy through Dot TV. Only great will do right now, I'm afraid.

I understand your point, but I would alter my original reply to 'good and great is in the eye of the beholder, too', in that, yes, you are certainly good at picking out domain names, but you do not know everyone's circumstance, their interests or their concept of value.

When canvastarps.com dropped, you might have paid up to 1K for the domain, or you might have stopped bidding at 80 bucks.

I would have continued bidding up to 20K, then contacted family for more resources, whatever it took to get that domain.

I am not being critical, you make a good point. I am just saying that your comments are more valid if applied to all .tlds rather than just .tv........ Personally, I see 10X more crappy names from other tlds talked about here than .tv names.

I think the .tv's just stand out because everyone knows they cost more. But, I am sure we, including myself, are registering the same amount of bad .com's. .net's, .cc's, and so on. We should all be able to register a domain, but be able to "unregister" it after a week, or so. Maybe there could be a 25% "restocking" fee! But, at least this way we could say "why did I register that name?", and get most of our money back! Of course, the registrars wouldn't like my idea!.

I agree, I reg 4-5 .coms for each .tv at least, and they are not even close to being as good... The keywords for the .tvs are better simply because the .coms are taken...

Hopefully the .tv thing won't be a flash in the pan... only time will tell I guess...

Value in domain names have to do with earnings potential and traffic. The "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder" stuff went out some time ago. It's been awhile.

As far as .TV names I own. I stayed within the confines of Godaddy. By no means do I feel that I have the "best" .TV names, however I feel that I got some very good names on the cheap. Let's just say I got some "type-in" names that won't break me come next October.

One thing I did forget to mention when you are looking to buy a .TV domain is to see if all the other extensions in the name have been bought up. If the .ws and .name are taken and the .TV is the only one left, you should probably consider buying it after checking OVT and Google.

On a few of the names I bought Glue, Meth, Chopper and BookClub they were the only ones left. My guess is possibly they were premium at one time, then dropped. ON all the rest of the names I purchased the .ws/.name were the only ones still available. This tells me, they are good names, but not a "hot" keyword...maybe "luke warm"....lol
