Hi all,

I was wondering what the experts think about the use of the .tv extension for Television related domain names vs using the .com extension. Obviously any really good word .tv is valuable, but lets look at a hypothetical example. Lets say you have the following domain name:

TelevisionProductionSecrets

Lets say that both extensions are available (.com and .tv), I think you might want to register both?? For the sake of the extra $7 or whatever for the .com... Or are you wasting the $35 on the .tv because you got the .com?

But if only the .tv was available would it be worth the $35? now obviously this particular domain wouldn't but lets say it is a decent two word domain with the word Television or TV in it?

Anyway, I realize that there are no magic answers, but I guess I am just wondering if you all think that the .tv extension will become more desirable for television related domains at some point...

Thanks !!

A quick check of www.tv's website and Overture shows the following:

"nba.tv โ€” Official website of the National Basketball Association"

No suggestions for nba.tv
482 nbatv.com
344367 nba.com

"tnt.tv โ€” Home of Turner Network Television"

324 tnt.tv
143 tnttv.com
17739 tnt.com

I'm sure there's plenty of examples of the reverse also, but one thing is clear. No matter how many times you flash it on the screen, or how many advertising dollars you spend, when you have a website with a .tv extension, a huge number of people, if not the majority, are going to type in the .com equivalent or at best, type in xxxxxxtv.com. The average internet user does not know there is a .tv extension. Ask your friends or work/school colleagues and see.

hehe I know that most people don't know about the .tv extension, I am thinking about the future, like a lot of domainers do, and I know that the almighty advertising machine that is Television will get the message out to the masses... I really think that .tv is an excellent extension and some domains with .tv are great, but I agree that right now most will go to the .com first, that is why I am wondering if lesser names and two word combos are such a good idea... I suppose if one really beleives in it it is worth the $35, but like most noobs I have a few (ok, more than a few) .coms that I shake my head over, and those are only about $7.00 a pop...

only time will tell, I guess...

Well people have been saying this since it was first launched as an extension in 1998. Here we are seven (!) years later, and people are still typing in either the .com version or xxxxxxtv.com.

See the following article from Wired in 1998:

http://wired-vig.wired.com/news/business/0,1367,15616,00.html

Mtv.tv is quoted as an example.

From Overture:

391 mtv.tv
395516 mtv.com

From Google:

Results 1 - 10 of about 21,600 for "mtv.tv"
Results 1 - 10 of about 809,000 for "mtv.com"

the dot tv ext has been growing and growing and unlike .com sales most are not reported there are members here who have told me of atr least 5 x,xxx to xx,xxx sales that htey cannot report, non np I know of at least another 6 in the last month x,xxx to xx,xxx and I really hope most stay out makes it easier to get the good names.
This too shall pass...

AGREE WITH YOU 100 %

Hope all the .commies stay out of .tv and it is pricing and that Verisign has run this wrong that hurts .tv if they were cheaper many More would be bought.

I will take my six.tv with 60 type ins a day than some three word .com. I thinK badger has made plenty of .tv sales and the best domainer on the planet ELEQUA is a big fan and big buyer of .tv names recently acquiring sexy.tv

I agree with this, I guess my point is that I think right now, and going forward that only really good or really Television oriented .tv domains will be really valuable... sexy.tv is really good, I think, maybe not specifically Television oriented, but could be spun that way.

So for example, a domain like GolfResorts.com wihich recently sold for high $xx,xxx I beleive, would not be nearly as valuable as a .tv, at least I dont think so, but say - GolfChannel.tv - that would be quite valuable (likely tm of course, just an example)... and of course the .com would be worth a lot for sure...

Right .tv names have to be more precise, geared toward sports programming, adult programming, networks or technology that deals with tv like ip.tv or iptv.tv Or lcd.tv. IMO

I just think they are so so expensive. With a .com or more so a .info if at the end of the day you have made a big booboo its not as bad as a $30 one >:(

I agree with all the points made, however you cannot compare a 3-letter, single-word domain like six.tv with "some three word .com". You might take six.tv over one of those, but would you take six.tv over six.com if you had to choose between the two?

you cannot approach this business with that approach a .info needs to fit the ext same with .tv a three word .info in most cases is worthless too, and people tend to reg a lot of them. If you are regging something that does not go with the .tv ext it will be worthless you have to spend money to make money in this business except for the occasional lucky offer. Better to own just 10 quality names than 100 so so names IMO

No owen certainly .tv is not ahead of .com except in a rare case, yes I would take LCD.tv over LCD.com. And the bottom line is you can still reg a LLL .tv you cannot .com

last two points...

Made by owenwww and equity78 are exactly why I started this thread... I have a list of a few .tv names that I am considering, all of them already have the .com registered, but they are more geared towards the .tv... They are not great names, but could possibly be ok... I am hesitating due to the higher reg fee... Obviously I will have to make the decision on my own, I was just looking for some solid advice, and I got it, thanks guys...

I have a few .tv domains that I'm planning to register ...once they drop the price :)

I agree if they are more suited towards broadcasting/tv then it's a more logicial extension, but it's just a sad fact that they're not well known enough (yet). Even TV stations that plaster their .tv address all over their ads/promos lose traffic to the .com and xxxxxtv.com variations.

The .net extension is more logical for many domains also, but again people tend to default to .com. You even see charities with both the .org and .com domains because they know a lot of people will type .com by accident.

Is godaddy the cheapest at the mo??

At $35/yr, I don't consider them cheap - especially when the dollar's almost four times my country's currency.

Here's a thought - Astro's a paid satellite tv station in Malaysia. Astro.com.my is used as the main website, while Astro.tv will be used to stream online tv :)

I registered my .TV (UnexplainedMysteries.TV) through godaddy for $31

I like the .tv extension for "multimedia" sites (only).

The "get rich quick" type site names in the .tv extension are just awful.

These domains aren't cheap, but it does keep the spammers away. They prefer the cheaper .us/.biz/.info names

I LOVE the .TV extension,I see it used more and more everyday. The cheapest I've found is Idotz.net,for $29.95.They are expensive at,but not prohibitively expensive.
I find myself registering 2 or 3 OVT .TV names per month lately, sometimes with Overture with extention too.
I even took a "risk" and registered a Premium 3-letter .TV for $500 per year---only because it had an Overture with Extention of 1297.It's on track to easily pay for itself and more with PPC.
.TV will only get bigger IMO,it's the most recognized 2 letters in the world!
