Is it possible to visit non-.MOBI websites with your mobile device? Websites such as Amazon.COM, Sedo.de or Ebay.in. Or do the sites you visit need to be .MOBI?

I've never connected to the internet through anything other that my PC, so please forgive my ignorance :)

Obviously you can go to any extension with your phone just like you can go to any extension with your PC. .mobi just means that the site will have a higher chance of being optimized for mobile phones where as when you visit a .com it might not be.

Dotmobi sites are designed to show on your phone, be usable, load quickly and provide fast information. Some sites can be viewed by phones better than others.

Compare for yourself on your phone. If you don't want to use your phone, you can use the emulator at mTLD http://mtld.mobi/emulator.php

http://weather.mobi

If you want to test how well a site will load, go to http://ready.mobi and type in your site. The ideal score is 5/5, anything under 3/5 is probably not going to work on a phone.

just to clarify; with .mobi there is a requirement that the site MUST work well on mobile devices or your domain may be shut down

I know there is a requirement that it MUST work well on the phone but that requirement has not been enforced yet so that is why I said there is a HIGHER chance of it being a mobile optimized site and not a 100% chance.

Wouldn't that be difficult to enforce now that the iphone has appeared?

No. .mobi sites should look good on any phone, not just the iPhone.

There are about 3 billion mobile phone subscribers in the world. A little over 1 million iPhones have been sold. My math skills are not real great when dealing with all those zeros, but I believe that is around 0.03%. Apple would have to sell 30 times more iphones then they already have to make up just 1% of the market.

If developers concentrate on being compatible to just iPhones, they are severely limiting themselves.

In my opinion, these smart/media phones are mobi-enablers, not mobi-destroyers -- I surfed several mobi sites w/ my smart phone today - I prefer the streamlined versions while I'm mobile and on the go --- and wait to surf the full versions (the dotcom) while I'm home, or at the office...and can use my PC or MAC

I hope the technology improves, so I can surf and read through mobi sites even faster --- the only time I might like the full versions is when I have long layovers at the airport, but even then, with the small screens, I'll stick to time.mobi, rather than time.com

that's one of the value propositions of mobi - streamlined content/data/info while on the go ---
