.IM Discussion

I have seen quite a few registered lately, has anyone got any comments on these names. What if there was a good keyword name, is it worth grabbing.

I believe its the Isle Of Man, but are people possibly going to use the "Instant Messaging" acronym for these domains??

Thanks for any advice??

thanks for your post, Maritime.im is something i liked and grabbed it for the sake of it if i make money or don't not worried
what i plan to do is make a mini site of it and use ad sense on it and try to seo it, there are some good words with CPC

like Maritime Law, Maritime Insurance and many more .im might be the most sickest TLD but guess what if good words are not available in other i think .im is a Gem itself, i have burnt alot of US$ back in 2008 jan buying every .com for 100+ in tdnam n other places what happened to it i dropped them now atleast i m being wise on my expense as 100 can bring 20 good words :) and the renewal cost isnt alot either just 19.99 US$/yr willing to gamble on that as domains is all about Gamble, who knew domains like Business.com - The Business Search Engine® and Business Directory for Business Information Candy from Candy.com, Bulk Candy, Gift Candy, Gourmet Candy, and Chocolate! could sell this high but they did.

personally i have no experience with .pro but i dont like either, :) i guess at the end everyone has his or her own opinions about domains, if someone was to give me .pro for free i wouldnt want it :)

good luck to your wise ness in domains and i hope it pays off to both your self and the people who understand you.

Why did you register Maritime.im? The keyword maritime has sold 4 times, all in .com, all in the range of $2k-$3k. If the keyword hasn't sold in any extension other than .com and even then not for very much, why would you spend $5 regging the .im? To me, it's like getting a $5 bill and burning it.

Let's imagine there is a company with an interest in the keyword maritime, what are they gaining from buying it in .im? I'll tell you what they are losing;

1) It will be a 2009 registration and search engines give preference to older continuously regged domains
2) Search engines will give .im domains a lower relevance than gTLD's on non Isle of Man search results because of the geo ending.

For those two reasons alone, no developer with any SEO knowledge would ever develop Maritime.im.

From a branding angle, "Maritime.im" makes no sense whatsover. The phrase "Maritime im" has 818 Google uniques, "Maritimeim" has 27.

For alternative extensions to stand a snowball in hell's chance of making any progress, they have to add something to the keyword, either to complement it or make it brandable. So for example, I regged Marine.pro in November 07. It wasn't a play on the keyword Marine, it was a play on the combination of the keyword Marine and extension Pro. "Marine Pro" has 57,900 Google uniques.

Take another of your registrations on this thread. Cargo.im, I regged Cargo.pro, again in November 2007. "Cargoim" has 264 Google uniques versus 4,730 for "Cargopro". My registration of Cargo.pro wasn't just for the keyword cargo, like Maritime it's not that lucrative, if you look on dnsaleprice, there have been 10 sales of Cargo keyword domains, 9 out of 10 were .com with the highest at $10,000, with just the 1 alternative eCargo.eu at $1,100. I regged Cargo.pro because Cargo and pro rhyme so combined with the Pro branding suffix, it makes it brandable.

The odds of making money out of alternative extensions are very slim so you should pick a keyword and extension pairing that makes logical sense, adds value, and might be more preferable to a buyer than the usual .net and .org alternatives to .com.

I'm a fan of alternative extensions and not just the extensions I've invested in; .info and .pro, I can also appreciate the branding appeal of certain keywords in .tv and .me. However, meaningless ccTLD's with "it could mean" hype like .cc, .ws, .im and so on which rely purely on their keyword are destined for the dustbin. They only have value when certain keywords are scarce but with 100's of extensions floating around and 100s more on the way, the only wheel of fortune being span when people hand over $4.99 to reg domains like Maritime.im is in their head.

If you are planning to do a minisite and SEO it for a key phrase like Maritime Law or Maritime Insurance, why not register MaritimeLaw.im or MaritimeInsurance.im, it would be easier to rank for those phrases with both words in the domain. If you did that, I could completely understand your logic.

With something like Maritime.im you're between a rock and a hard place. Maritime.im isn't brandable because there is no obvious link between maritime and im and it's difficult to get ranked high in a search engine because it's a ccTLD, it's a new domain, and people don't search for a 1 word dictionary word like maritime so the domain is contributing virtually nothing to a search engine's assessment of relevance.

If you want to make money through a minisite for the keyphrase Maritime Law, you should think about buying MaritimeLaw.org on Sedo, because it's a gTLD and regged continuously since 1998, you'd have a real chance of getting on the first 2-3 pages of Google, the seller has a price expectation of $1,000, you might pick it up for significantly less than that, and it's worth a hatful of .im domains.

Domaining is a gamble but like horses in a race, some are more likely to win than others. Regging .im is the gambling equivalent of backing a 3 legged donkey. You're getting nothing that contributes value in a domain name with something like Maritime.im; for example, the security, saleability, and complete acceptance of a .com, a top 1,000 blockbuster keyword of something like Casino.im, Travel.im, or Diamond.im (at auction at Sedo with a high bid of just $75), or the brandability of a natural keyword alternative extension pairing like Ringtones.mobi, News.tv, Help.me, Golf.pro, Rates.info etc.

Thanks for the good suggestion akcambell, i totally agree with you there on keywords but sometimes when i like something i buy it regardless of what it can benefit me in long run.

i like your suggestion of Martimelaw.org i will try to see how much he is willing to sell that and might grab it if its cheap.

as for .im even if 99% are against it i m support it as i feel it might pay of the 180 US$ i spent on 35 domains so i m least bothered.

once again thanks for ur suggestion and comments and help some of the people here save money :)

Have you used them before ?

I regged 3 domains with them. They took my money, the domains went through the pending process, I received my sales invoice, and then the domains disappeared.

Customer services issued an automated ticket in response to my query, no response so I sent another message. Received another automated ticket instantly. Still no response.

I'll hold back on the reps.

Sorry to hear that.

I registered 3 .im names at eurodns & I got them within a few hours of registering.

Limos.im, Limousines.im, and Limousine.im

I'm wondering what went wrong with your order!

I'll see what tomorrow brings, if they respond :!:

I just get so frustrated at slow customer service. It must be one of the most important issues for a successful business, and so many of them neglect it.

will let you know how I get on.

Update.

Just received email saying that the card payment failed, which I dont believe ( not from my end anyway ) Seems a long way to go for that to have happened. Payment, ok'd by visa's security, more than 2 hours in pending status, emailed me an invoice, then next day decide that the payment has failed ? I think its more likely that they have bitten off more than they can chew, selling at that price.
Still, never mind. I'll just reg them somewhere else.

I'm so sorry to hear that, but I don't think they tried to scam you because the names are still available.
