I'm a bit confused..

IE6 users typing in £,com ..i'd like to transfer them, seamlessly, to poundsymbol,com.

(note: not the domain's punycode xn--9a,com but its unicode £,com).

Any ideas on how I can do that? - I don't think a simple (client side) redirect will do it...

I agree that redirect is the easiest way. It can affect google ranking (hasn't affected me yet) but apart from that its all good.
