Need a nice logo....

I need a logo for a whale watching site - alaskawhaletours/com.

The logo will go on the top right side of the whale where "whale tours.com" is (or maybe on the left side of the whale...thee current lettering is temporary, so if you have any ideas...). The current background photo might be changed from time to time, maybe to one that is a bit lighter or bluer, so keep that in mind.

If possible it would be nice to have a scaleable (vector?) logo, so I can resize it easily and use in several places.

Logo should be catchy and classy....inclusion of a whale, whale fluke (tail) or boat or such is probably a good idea...something that someone can look at and know exactly what it means.

Ideally, I'd like to see a few designs before choosing one, but am open to suggestions on this. I'd like to keep the cost under $30, if possible, but could go a bit higher if necessary.

Edit: Answers to some questions:

I'd prefer the logo to be solid colors (as opposed to transparent), as it may be used in different places.

For size, I'd prefer a vector file, so I can easily make it different sizes. If that's not possible, it would goon the right of the whale (the current site title would go away), so it needs to be big enough for people to easily see and read.

For design, something to do with whales and Alaska....with Alaska Whale Tours or AlaskaWhaleTours.com somehow integrated. It can be any shape as long as it looks good. If you use a whale, please be sure it's the shape of a humpback or gray whale...not the square-headed look. (the majority of the photos on the site are humpback...others are in "varieties" sectiion.)

Although I've received several PMs, only one person has offered any sort of potential design. I can't award the project to anyone without seeing at least some sort of quickie mock-up, even if it's not what I like. I am very willing to work with someone to refine an idea, but I have no design in mind for you...I'm hoping you are creative and can show me something that looks good and has something related to Alaska Whale Tours as the central theme.

I sort of envisioned this like the old Design Contest category, where people offered up what they could do, and I'd pick what appeals to me as soon as I saw it....then work with the developer to refine the logo and be done with it.

I can give it another two days for mock-ups I can compare...and make a decision.

My apologies for not commenting about your design. As it was the only one I'd seen, I was hoping to get a few more in order to point out what appeals to me. timstown, Sorry I cut corners and just put Whale Tours. Alaska is crucial to the logo, whether it's written or shown (like an outline of the state with a whale or lettering) or both.

Note: This is an extremely rough idea. I wanted to incorporate either the head or the tail of a whale because, when your out touring typically thats what you see, unless they are following the tour boat (having lived in the NW; puget sound area most my life). I like to work closely with my clients which is why I would like feedback, I want to make something you like and are satisfied with. Apologies for miscommunication.

i suggest PMing member jkennedy - he did www.BoycottChinaProject.com I think his style would for whale tourism - his logo/headers canpture a moment/emotion that is really relative...

jurrie, your designs have the information and a fairly nice concept, but the order of the words doesn't seem to fit, and the whale is a bit off.

timstown, with a different kind of site, your smiling whale logos would work. I'm not sure they are a match for mine, though. Will think about it a little.

Sure...your whale resembles an Orca (killer whale) without the white markings. (Note the high dorsal fin, color and overall shape.) While Orcas are in Alaska and are part of whale watching, the big draw is the chance to see a Humpback Whale (or a gray whale). Notice how the two side-by-side drawings resemble the photos of breaching Humpback whales....and the distinctly different look of killer whales with all the white patches on black bodies?

Edit: I would be interested in seeing a larger image of Alaska with a Humpback and lettering on top it...arranged, colored and shaded however loks best. Don't know if it would need a border (like the circle, but maybe). Not even sure my idea would look good at all, but it's worth a look if someone has the time.
