If you had a product that sounds almost too good to be true would you name it PopFly?

The product is amazing, the name… well, interesting.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m sure many other domainers are also thanking their lucky stars that this product and similar ones are being launched right now, and most won’t quibble about the name.

But before we go into the serious part let’s have a little game of word association.

I’m sure a lot of deep thought went into this branding decision, a lot of highly qualified experts conducted brainstorming sessions, and a lot of analysis was done on focus group data before they made the final choice.

I somehow suspect however that there weren’t any domainers in those groups.

It may be just me though, so here is my question:

What’s the first thing that comes to mind when you hear, say or read the name PopFly?

(Bob)Hey Ted we need to name this something catchy, you know hip, groovy so the kids will dig it.
(Ted)Well Bob what does it do?

(Ted) wait... I've got it let's call it Popfly
(Bob) Brilliant
(Ted) Brilliant let's call Bill back

wow.
seriously. Microsoft needs to do something about its names. They just announced their analytics software, Gatineau. What were they thinking when they named that (after a geo location)? How many people can actually spell Gatineau? How many can actually pronounce it?

What it does is basically make us domainers look stupid when we send out our emails to end users for sales. "XXX.com name is short, brandable and catchy", we say, and suppose the end user replies with "Microsoft doesn't think short, brandable and catchy is necessary."

Lame.

Phew, what a relief!

The answers above were very clever and entertaining, but I was starting to fear that the forces of darkness have managed to erase everyone else's memory of certain events, and that I'm next!

I thought first of baseball. The next thing after you hear the ump say after a pop fly is "yer out". which doesn't sound like a good theme.

The second thought with "fly" was registerfly. I've seen several domains recently with fly that I immediately wondered if it was part of registerfly. Other than domainers and some webmasters though, I don't think registerfly is that well known. Even when scamming tens of thousands, they barely got any mainstream news stories. That's probably why they are not dead and still crawling around on piles of crap after having their wings clipped.

Speaking of first impressions, I always wondered why registerfly picked housefly as their logo. Their original slogan was "fly through registration". Why not pick a jet, a bird or something fast and sleek to represent that. Instead they picked a hated insect that circles erratically over crap, is just a grown up maggot, and everyone want to swat.

:)
