Hello Everyone,

What do you namepros members think ? Is IDN hot or not ?

* The buzz word in the domain market offlate has been IDNs.

* DCG (dotcomgod) has bought close to 5000 IDN domains.

* There are some big speculators with loads of IDNs.

* Dedicated forums for IDNers like IDNF

* Dedicated tools from IDNtools.net

* In the last 6 months a lot of IDNs have been picked in various languages.

*** Well if you think it is hot why are the namepros staff not up to having a dedicated sub forum for IDNs.

P.S. If there has been a similar post, moderators can move this one to junk.

The scarcity of cheap dot coms is what makes other extensions, including cctlds, hot. That means dot coms will always be the top dogs over other cctlds.

If cctlds are hot, dot coms are always hotter.

As for localized versions of domain names, its value is proportional to the number of native speakers who have Internet access times their average disposable income level.

The first rule is generally too simplicitic to be true. .COMs are globally strong but not equally strong in all markets. The demand function of a CCTLD is not really always a function of the availability of .COMs. There are reasons for CCTLDs to have more value than .COMs in some local markets. Take Japan, IDN.JP is cheaper than IDN.COM, promoted locally by the Japanese registry, and signfies to users and search engines that the website targets Japanese people not gaijin. .COM cannot offer that kind of assurance. The last thing Japanese people want is to go to a site and find Chinese on it. This will rarely happen if you surf .JP sites. If you go to auction sites and compare prices on .JP/.COM/and .NET you will see that prices are tiered in this order.

As for your second rule, I tend to agree with it, thus the value of an IDN domain is going to be a function of the expected per capita GDP and internet enabled population who speak that language primarily.
