I'm not Australian but I am pretty sure .id.au is not popular and .com.au is the only third level domain you'll want.

The restrictions and price makes it not good for investment, I have a few .id names and drop all of them recently. But yes it's a great tld for personal websites, I planed to reg one for my personal blog.

Absolutely, also they have 9,990 reserved domains https://web.archive.org/web/20160404213532/http://pandi.id/domaindibatasi.html which makes it even worse, they must be learn from .CO and .IO thought.
