ccTLD's can be divided into 4 categories
1/ Global Popularity High
Names that have a high usage around the world.
.cc .ws .us are a few of these ccTLD's that have a reasonable value
and usage.
2/ Local popularity High
Names that have a high usage in the Country of origin.
.co.uk,.com.au & .de
3/ Local popularity Only
Used by locals or by speculators looking for keyword names
.bz .hu ,.cn,.IN and most others that have unlimited registration rules
4/ Everything else
These may seem to be have lots of available names ,
but usually have such restricted access no-one can register them.
.id.au .org.au .asn.au
Now in the last category ,.au namespace domains have been getting a lot of attention in the last couple of weeks
Especially since registerfly started selling them as an agent of MelbourneIT
(At especially HIGH prices)
A few people ,especially newcomers , seem to think that the highly restricted .au NameSpace is a GoldMine of available Keyword names.
As an Australian I am being continually asked about them.
So I have setout below a few guidelines.
Yes .com.au and especially .id.au .org.au .asn.au have a large and varied list of available names.
but the main reason is the difficulty of even Australians to register them
.com.au .net.au Registrants MUST be an Australian Registered Business
Name can be any thing available that is associated with the business
i.e. BareFootTech.net.au <<company Name
LowCostHosting.com.au <<Business Service
Deepwater.com.au <<Location
.asn.au .org.au Registrants Must be Australian Organisations
Name must be associated with the name of the Group
2cbd.org.au <<-- 2cbd is call sign of the FM station
.id.au Registrants must be Australian Citizens Resident in Australia
AND the name must have some PERSONAL connection and
IDENTIFICATION with the registrant.
Dunderhill.id.au <<--My Name D.Underhill
Now .id.au also allows for the registration of NickNames
Which requires a declaration of usage.
Vista.id.au <<-- My Nickname :hehe:
.id.au,asn.au,org.au has millions of available KeyWord rich Names, because of these restrictions. If you manage to register one by lying during registration ,you will lose the name and possibly will get fined
Recent example CASINO.org.au
Anyway Domain Name Speculation is Prohibited anyway ,so Reselling or trading of the name is not allowed either.
