I'm not Australian but I am pretty sure .id.au is not popular and .com.au is the only third level domain you'll want.
id.au

Right!
1/ ID.AU is only for AUSTRALIAN Residents
2/ ID.AU is only for personal or nickname blogstyle sites
3/ ID.AU registered by anyone else will be "policy deleted" by auDA within days of registering.
4/ .COM.AU and .NET.au can be only registered by persons or companies with either
a/ Australian Business Number
b/ Australian Company Number
c/ Australian Registered trademark Number
5/ .COM.au and .NET.au can be foreign company owned, but they MUST have an australian presence and one of the above qualifying numbers.

BareFootTech is a former auDA board member and current owner of over 50 Com.au and .net.au Names.

The restrictions and price makes it not good for investment, I have a few .id names and drop all of them recently. But yes it's a great tld for personal websites, I planed to reg one for my personal blog.
