The multi billion-dollar porn industry hope for personalized domain identity came to sudden end when the domain regulating body ICANN voted NO to the XXX domain extension. “This is truly a sad day in the porn industry camp, but a day of rejoicing both for conservative Christian and parent against the porn industry said Elie of NamingJournal.com.”

“Today, ICANN's Board of Directors voted against a proposed agreement for a .XXX. Sponsored Top Level Domain (sTLD). The application was proposed by the ICM Registry.

The application has received much public comment and detailed discussion by the ICANN Board. Reflecting the diversity of views this application has generated, the Board discussion at today's meeting focused on the criteria for the sTLD, especially for sponsorship, and the terms of the contract proposed by ICM, including compliance issues related to key terms associated with public policy concerns. ICM had proposed additional terms in response to issues raised by ICANN's Governmental Advisory Committee, particularly at ICANN's meeting in Wellington in March. http:// www.icann.org/announcements/announcement1-18apr06.htm

ICM had requested that the ICANN Board vote on the proposed contract at this meeting.

ICANN's Board voted 9 to 5 against the proposed agreement. Votes in favor of the proposed .XXX Registry Agreement were cast by the following Board Members: Veni Markovski, Susan Crawford, Peter Dengate Thrush, Joichi Ito, and Mouhamet Diop. Directors who voted against the approval were Vint Cerf (Chairman), Alejandro Pisanty (Vice-Chairman), Raimundo Beca, Demi Getschko, Hagen Hultzsch, Njeri Rionge, Vanda Scartezini, Paul Twomey (President and CEO), and Hualin Qian. Additional details regarding the vote will be provided by ICANN later this week.”

I would have thought christians would have supported this. It could have been used to help better block kids from seeing porn...

.Com / .Net porn sites would still remain up.

That's what I would have thought as well. Kinda like putting the porn movies in the back behind the saloon doors at the video store.

It's quite possible that the extension would encourage a whole bunch more porn sites though seeing how the .com porns wouldn't close shop and migrate over to .xxx. Maybe the thinking was that not only would you have a whole bunch of .com porn but now a whole bunch more in the .xxx extension.

Overall, I am glad it didn't go through.

I hope there won't be any appeal process or lawsuit because of the xxx rejection by ICANN

There will be. Let some of the top porn sites worth hundreds of millions flex a little muscle (and money) this is not the last we hear of this

I also find it sad and disturbing that religion plays a role in domain names

When all 13 root servers are parked in 1 country, that 1 country has clout ;p

If the .com/.net porn sites had to close up shop and migrate to .xxx, it would have been one thing.. otherwise, .xxx just opens up a larger can of worms.. glad it failed.

"I think that would be interesting and know many Christian organizations will jump on aboard."

Personally I can see there's a big difference between purely religious dotcom's and those who peddle porn or even violence..

And I can argue that a religious dotcom is another way for a organization to try to get me to buy into their beliefs. How is anyone peddling porn. Consumers want porn so companies put it out there. IF you dont want to see it you dont need to look.
