(3/30/06 - KTRK/CLEVELAND, TX) - A Cleveland area mother is outraged and offended after getting more than what she paid for at a local Wal-Mart store.

Shelley Bettis say she's now forced to answer questions she was not ready to answer because her children saw things they were too young to see. She bought a DVD player, but also got pornography.

Bettis and her three children just wanted to watch Bambi II Tuesday afternoon, but before Shelley could load the DVD in the new Apex player she had just bought, something else popped up on the screen, and it was a far cry from Bambi.

"I don't even want to tell you what I saw," said Bettis.

Already inside the player, Shelly says, was a DVD. The label was so graphic that we can't even show it to you. The material on it is pornography.

"I was floored," she said. "I felt my heart hit the ground that my children had to see that. I was disgusted."

All three of her children, the youngest just eight years old, saw the first few seconds of the DVD before Shelley lunged for the player to turn it off. Thirteen-year-old Taylor watched sex acts she didn't even know about.

"It's very gross," said Taylor. "I saw body parts I've never seen before."

Shelley bought the $34 player at a Cleveland Wal-Mart and says the box it came in had not been tampered with.

In a statement, Wal-Mart apologizes and says, "We are thoroughly investigating the matter at this time."

No one at Apex, the manufacturer, returned our calls.

In a home where the focus is on faith and morals, the wrong purchase, Bettis says, stole her children's innocence.

"For them to see what they seen, it's not right," she said.

Wal-Mart encourages Shelley to return the DVD player to the store for a full refund. In the meantime, Bettis is now exploring her legal options and also plans to have her daughters see a counselor.

LMAO. That's great! What a shame it was wasted!

Give me a break! She's just trying to cash in - the DVD never played, all she saw was the label. She's just wants some money from it.

You think I was born yesterday??? :D

LOL

That's pretty funny indeed :). How'd she get a porn DVD inside the DVD player already? Do you get a free DVD with the player, or was it 2nd hand? Or something else :o.....

This sounds like a scam to me. Even if that did really happen...why would the kids need counseling?

See when people go too far with the matter like that it just makes it seems too suspicious that it's a scam to get money. I don't believe this story. It's like putting a cockroach in your food at dinner to get a free meal. In this case maybe a lawsuit or something.

Hmm yeah I don't understand why they would need counseling either. I'm thinking it's a scam.

I dont't think they'd need counselling, but depending on their age, it could definately take the parents a long while of talking to get the kids to realise what was going on.

And actually, yes it could be a little devistating to a child around 3-4, who has absolutely no knowledge of what's going on!

if they have no knowledge of what's going on then how could they be devastated? They wouldn't think anything of it.

It's more like the parents that need counseling...

Im not saying that it's right to take the people on just because there was a porn DVD in there, sounds like that's the impression your getting...

Im just saying that YES it would be very strange to the kids who were watching to see something that they can do, never knew about it, and dont know WHY theyre doing it, whether or not theyre supposed to be doing it (the kids), and a heap of other questions, why do you think most parents kind of hesitate to tell their kids about sex at a young age?... There's a reason. (PS - I was never told at all, school taught me).

Im not going to go into any great detail on this! You can work the rest out. ;)

This story smells like a bunch of foul B.S. to exploit Wal-Mart for the money and publicity. There is no way to confirm that there was a dvd in the player when she purchased it as Wal-Mart employees would not of followed her home and watched her remove it from the box. She could therefore come up with any claims she wants.

but before Shelley could load the DVD in the new Apex player she had just bought, something else popped up on the screen
That's not true. When you setup a DVD player then it doesn't begin playing automatically without first hitting the power button and the play button. Just like after hooking a computer up, it doesn't start by itself after you plug it in without hitting power. Also why would she hit play before she even puts the Bambi DVD in the tray?? And even if the power was on then it doesn't begin playing until play is pressed or until you open the tray up, insert the DVD, and close it. Something doesn't add up.

It sounds like another person who's too lazy to work who thinks they can hit the jackpot and exploit Wal-Mart for millions. They should hook her up to a lie detector test, she'd probably fail. If it is indeed a bogus story then she sure isn't much of a mother to use her children like that and teach them that it's okay to take the easy route and just come up with a story to target a large company. :td:

I think the only one who needs counseling is the mother as she sounds like a fruitcake.

I could be wrong and she's got a legit case, but I highly doubt it as the story has more of a foul smell to it than anything else. Just doesn't add up.

It sounds like foul play to me, even if it is for real she doesn't deserve a penny...her kids will be fine and for anyone who has ever watched a dvd porn or not there are always disclaimers/warnings before the dvd even goes to the menu or movie so you have at least 30 seconds...just another person trying to get easy money....the American dream!

I think it's B.S. also because the THIRTEEN year old says she's seen bodyparts she's never seen before. Has she not ever taken a shower and when you live with people you're bound to see something every now and then even if you don't want to.

Anyways my DVD player plays as soon as you turn it on if there is a disc in it. She would have had to press power to insert the DVD if she had one with an auto eject. And unless it was previously used it will only go to the title menu. So if it was possibly used before she got it when she press power it will start from the last scene or at least that's what all the DVD players in my house do.

What, I didn't know the kid was 13... It's definately a load of BS!
