I love learning about online tools out there.

What do you use?

I'll start with these...

I won't repeat ones that others have listed already. But here are a few you may not think of:

https://www.dcode.fr/duplicates-detector - finds or lists duplicates in a list. Let's say you have a list of domain names and you want to remove or find ones that repeat. You can easily do it with this tool.

https://www.textfixer.com/tools/remove-white-spaces.php
- removes extra white space or tabs. Can save a lot of time when dealing with domains, auth codes, spreadsheet lists, etc.

https://tld-list.com/ and https://tldes.com/com - to compare domain registration / renewal prices.

https://instantdomainsearch.com/ - quickly determine if domain is available.

https://www.libreoffice.org/ -
think of it as a free and open-source version of Microsoft office. It has the equivalent of Excel too called Calc. Very similar controls, so you'll feel at home. VERY capable software.

https://peerideas.com - Have your domain names valued and appraised by other domainers.

https://www.uclassify.com/browse/uclassify/iab-taxonomy-v2?input=Text - plug in a keyword and it will classify it into one of 500+ categories. Helpful for figuring out how to categorize your domain or what industry a name could fit. Not always accurate but still helpful.

https://hackerpain.github.io/bulkvaluator/ - bulk GoDaddy appraisals. A little buggy but works.

The PSL Query Service

A "public suffix" is one under which Internet users can (or historically could) directly register names. Some examples of public suffixes are .com, .co.uk and pvt.k12.ma.us. The Public Suffix List is a list of all known public suffixes.

The service at publicsuffix.zone allows querying the Public Suffix List (PSL) conveniently via the DNS.

Presentation at DNS-OARC 36 - November 30, 2021 (PDF)

https://indico.dns-oarc.net/event/4... 36, Public Suffix List DNS Query Service.pdf

Description

Information from the Public Suffix List (PSL) is required in various contexts, for example for cookie scoping in browsers, for certificate issuance, and for the secure operation of authoritative multi-tenant nameservers. Applications depending on the PSL customarily bring their own copy of the list, and thus require mechanisms to parse and interpret the list, and to keep it up to date.

The PSL Query Service removes the need for applications to parse or refresh the PSL altogether. Based on a mapping of the PSL onto the DNS, it instead facilitates single-query lookups to immediately retrieve the public suffix that is associated with a given name.

In this short contribution, I discuss the motivation, design, and applications of the PSL Query Service and explain its internal structure, before reflecting on privacy concerns that may arise. The talk ends with considerations about whether and how to better integrate the service into the Internet community.

I prefer namecheap bulk search. Earlier I was using namebright. It seems like they have restricted the service now

domain name analyzer pro
This is a great tool...........I forgot how to use it. Thought I had a walk thru video or took notes but can't find it.

I'm cleaning up my Domain folder and forgot I had it. Mainly used it for hand regs, checking bulk names at a time. Hasn't updated in awhile, still has Bido columns on it. Right now in the middle of checking 200,000+ names. Think I remember how to do that.

I use this tool for handreg. it's now open it to public for free. And I think it would be remain for free for a while.

Search Example
https://beta.mydomaintool.com/?search=more
https://beta.mydomaintool.com/?search=domain

Usage
Replace the keyword after ?search=

Let's say you only want to reg some .com / .net / .org domains.
Use the browser search to search against .com .net .org, then take a look at the result without highlight.

* Since the data are extract from zone files, they are not always accurate.
Sometime, the domain extensions are not listed but they're in fact already registered.

How good is DomainIndex.com valuations?
For the most part automated appraisal tools are useless at automatically appraising names with any degree of accuracy.

OK. Understand. But how good is it compared to say GoDaddy. Or are they all the same degree of inaccuracy? For example. I would say GoDaddy is better than Estibot, overall.

Well, I'm biased because I created it, but NameWorth helped me increase the price of indicor(dot)com this summer, which sold in November for $29,500. It would have been about a quarter of that had it been my price before the NameWorth recommendation.

Some people say no appraisals work, but after 20 years of investing it's made me better at more objectively looking at domain quality. When I was running the expired domains newsletter it was accurately predicting the highest quality domains of the day up to 80% of the time.

Bizarre and Unusual Uses of DNS

Rule 53: If you can think of it, someone's done it in the DNS

DNS, like almost any protocol or system on the internet, has been used in ways almost from the day it was born that were probably never intended or envisioned by its inventors.

This talk is an overview of some of the more interesting ways that people have thought to embrace and extend DNS, from large to small.

From static traceroutes to fully-fledged companies using entire protocols based on top of the DNS, there are a hundred different ways where creative people have seen ways to bend it to their will. While a lot of these are now sadly confined to history, taking a look at some of these inventions is always fun and can often be educational. DNS tools, DNS toys, DNS tunneling, and DNS filesystems, are just some of the examples of uses and misuses that we'll take a look at.

DNSFilter Top Domains

The DNSFilter Top Domains List is generated by Webshrinker and DNSFilter. It is a list of domains seen, ranked by number of queries and filtered, generated monthly.

DNSFilter is a protective DNS service that classifies domains and allows customers to configure policies to block different categories. The source dataset (the DNS queries seen by DNSFilter) is around 50bn queries per day as of Feb 2023, although this is growing.

Methodology

DNSFilter extracts this list of top domains from DNS queries seen from customers. In order to avoid exposing any potentially sensitive domains, we drop any queries for domains that less than 20 distinct organizations have looked up.

Any domain that was looked up by more than 20 organizations receives 1 vote per organization per day. The ranking is then determined by the total number of votes for each domain over the entire month.

The DNSFilter top domains lists:
https://github.com/DNSFilter/topdomains/tree/main/lists

Other top domains lists:
Tranco, Cisco Umbrella, CloudFlare Radar, Moz, CrUX, Majestic, SecRank
