I recently purchased Restock.net

I contacted the owner of the .com as a potential buyer (It's prob out of my price range, but why not try). He responds back it's gonna be 6 figures in order for him to part with it.

Indeed it is out of my budget... so I offer to sell him the .net. Well, he's "not interested..." Don't .NET's have ~10% of value, in which case he would think my name is worth $10,000, or at least ~1%, for a paltry $1,000?

Well, I thought I was clever. I'm sure this could make .net / .info / .us to end users easier, first letting them hype up their value of the name, then saying "Oh... in that case" and letting them buy for a small portion, but still better than what you would have normally gotten

opinions?

I think the only people that subscribe to the notion that .net is worth 10% of the .com are people that own .nets. I mean some .nets sell when an end user will not pay the .com owners price, that's where I think you have a chance, you have a good name and if an end user comes along that will not pay xxx,xxx Then hopefully they will come to you for like $2,000 to $10,000.

I agree EQ...And the corporate buyers are buying .nets aswell...Look at PartyPoker.net and it's high television adverting budget... Seems as end-users are getting tired of being held at bay by the .com owner who wants outragous $$$$'s for thier name...They just go .net..And why not....I would too

I agree with you some corps will not pay the .com outrageous price because if the owner knows it a corp thae asking price gets really crazy. Do not read too much into the .net with poker sites, they all do this Bodog.net, paradise poker.net, partypoker.net etc they have no choice they cannot by law advertise their .com because thats the gambling site, they all created a free site with no real money on the .net to be able to advertise.

Still the poker sites use a lot of money on advertising a .net which means that more people will be familiar with the extension.

A lot of the reason behind the Poker sites using .net has to do with advertising restrictions placed on gambling sites.

They can advertise the .net because you can't gamble on the .net site, only on the .com site...

But their reasoning for using a .net is completely different than someone who is looking to build a brand on a .net, or other companies that have already established dominance on the .COM and have no need for the .NET.

Whenever you build a popular website on a .NET, you will lose traffic to the .COM. People just have .COM on the mind, so even though you're spending $1 million to advertise your .NET, many people will still visit the .COM. For the Poker companies that have been mentioned, this is actually a very good thing for them because they can't by law advertise the .COM's.

You are right, the .net will always loose traffic to the .com but my point was that I think many people will get to know the .net extension a lot better so it is great that some companies are using a lot of money on advertising .net sites (even that they really want you to go to the .com). Of cause nothing beats .com, it´s the TLD king :)

BTW I think my first post was a bit OT.

That has nothing to do with why they advertise the .net. All those and other gambling businesses advertise the .net because the networks won’t open themselves up to possible legal issues by allowing advertisements for what might be illegal online gambling. These company’s all have a real money website “a dot com” but they have to have a “Just for fun” site to advertise and that’s usually the .net.

Best wishes,
Kimmy

Exactly! All the sites and many others all operate the Real Money site on the .com.

I am glad so many people reiterated what I said, I have always been lost when it comes to .net I see some sell on DNJournal but there never seems to be a common theme I know RicK Schwartz has said .net was the worst yet many domainers place it at #2 but in the end does being #2 mean anything in the DOMAIN WORLD?

Hmmm...

I'm not so sure that .net is clearly #2 any longer.

I personally like

.com
.info
.us because I see .net as a week TLD, .info has meaning, and .us is a future power, but the fact remains that most regard it as #2 (i only have ~10 .net's as opposed to ~300 .com/.us/.info's)

in this case, it could be that the .com owner is interested in selling his domain, but is not interested in putting any more money into domains to buy your .net.

I have had this kind of exchange before, where a person asks for my .com, and when I tell them the price, they offer their .net.
The thing is, I want to sell, not buy at this perticular time (and for that specific type of domain he was offering).
So, I wouldnt take it personally. He may be a domainer thats only into selliong, or, a non domainer that doesnt want to spend money on other extensions and just wants to sell.
Makes perfect sense to me.
Either way, I think in general .net is #2

If you're not sure that .NET is clearly #2... Just look @ the number of .NET's out there vs .INFO etc... .COM is the king.. .NET is second... I see this debate in chat ALL the time and I can't even believe that there are people out there who think .INFO/.US are of more value then .NET..

Well for starters .us is a cctld and therefore restricted to only US citizens. Mind you there is alot of them. But not enough to compete in the domain industry with .us. Also the only reason .info is so "popular" is due to it's lower price.

Personally I see it as .com - .net - .info
Also due to the "free" .be thing I think they also managed to gain a minority by use of giving away a free domain. The fact that millions took up their marketing scheme.
