Hello guys,

I already made the mistake of buying domains without learning more about the domain business.

I'm really confused and I need help understand somethings like;
- how do I know a good domain?
- where can I buy a good domain?
- are there good expired domains?
- what's so special about the 3,4,5 letters and numbers?
- does the 3,4 letters have to be pronouncable to be a good domain?
- is it possible to sell a domain with very weak traffic at a good price?

I have many more questions but I think I'll make do with these ones if I get the answers. I'm really looking forward to hearing your answers. Please help a girl out. Thanks :)

I'm really confused and I need help understand somethings like;
- how do I know a good domain? - Is it one you wished you had?
- where can I buy a good domain? - Everywhere. Auctions, aftermarket sites, expiring, forums, etc.
- are there good expired domains? - yes
- what's so special about the 3,4,5 letters and numbers? - rarity, limited amount of.
- does the 3,4 letters have to be pronouncable to be a good domain? - no
- is it possible to sell a domain with very weak traffic at a good price? - yes

You're just going to have to stop buying, and 'read, read, read' as much as you can til you grasp the ins and outs of domaining. It's not hard, but to do it without understanding the basics, and more, will simply drain your bank account and you'll end up giving up with a bad taste for it.

- how do I know a good domain?
From experience. To obtain such experience, read the forum and try to sell the domains that you have. Do not buy many domains until you have sold some and got a feeling of the market.
- where can I buy a good domain?
On normal auctions (e.g. Flippa is relatively cheap and Namesilo is not bad either), on expiring auctions (GD and other registrars), on GD closeouts, from dropcatching, or at this forum. Hand-registering a semi-decent domain is also possible, but you must have some experience for that.
- are there good expired domains?
Depends on what you call "good". There are ways to make money from expired domains, but this is not very easy. On the other hand, many people (including myself) have sold hand-regs from expired lists for high $xxx - low-mid $x,xxx.
- what's so special about the 3,4,5 letters and numbers?
They are limited in number and thus are a rarity and a vanity luxury product. In addition, Chinese like them as an investment (remember that Chinese prefer some specific numbers and letters, the so-called "chips"). For these reasons, short domains are liquid ("easy to sell instantly for a forseeable sum of money") and tend to grow in value over time.
- does the 3,4 letters have to be pronouncable to be a good domain?
No, but the pronounceable 4Ls tend to cost more on the Western market. However, Chinese do not like domains with A, E, I, O, U, V.
- is it possible to sell a domain with very weak traffic at a good price?
Absolutely. Traffic is a bonus to a domain, but it does not defines its price.

Hello guys,

- how do I know a good domain?

At the beginning you should stay in ".com", the ones more valuable and marketable.

We have to think of a domain as an added value for business!! :xf.wink:

Trial and error - I made a lot of buying mistakes too.

You have to learn fast from your buying mistakes to move forwards.

Good luck with your future endeavors :)

-look at recent sales to see what people are buying (namebio.com, dnpric.es)
-anywhere like sedo, flippa, namepros, etc, but make sure you research what is great
-yes but rarely for regfee. Sites like dropcatch, godaddy auctions allow you to bid on expiring/expired domains
-Rarity and Chinese investment preferences
-no but it can certainly help
-yes

we've all bought plenty of bad domains, but experience will help you avoid that. Good luck!!

Haha I agree with all the great info given, especially this right here. You need to commit to reading this forum and learning all you can. There is going to be a lot of information but just take your time. NamePros is a great source, Domainsherpa and you can learn so much from Recent/ Past sales go over to NameBio.com.

The only other nuggets of knowledge I want to add is simply. Focus on 2 word .coms for now. From experience and from looking at others in the industry you can get your hands on these at a fair price.

Your questions below:

- how do I know a good domain?

You have to get good at analyzing the domain, does it sound right? how many related sites are using the same keyword term in their domain? How many monthly searches, although I don't stress this too much.

- where can I buy a good domain?

One of my favorite sites is Expireddomains.net you can see pending deletes, pre releases and domains up for auction by owners and just filter through them to find the best ones.

- are there good expired domains?

Yes as I mentioned above expireddomains.net is awesome =-D

- what's so special about the 3,4,5 letters and numbers?

They are hot right now, I really do not understand this market. The beauty about the domain industry is that you choose what to focus on. Here I am making great profits on 2 word .coms, one word .net/org/info/tv. While not understanding one bit about numeric or short characters. (You can learn about either strategy by reading more as everyone mentioned)

- does the 3,4 letters have to be pronounceable to be a good domain?

There are a lot of threads on this and case studies. Read up if you choose the path of numeric and short characters.

- is it possible to sell a domain with very weak traffic at a good price?

Yes! The way I have been able to is I make sure the domain has a lot of related sites with the keyword in it. These are potential people I can reach out to as they are targeted end users. A tool I use for this is Zfbot.com, powerful at helping me find those related sites.
