Don't be sorry. I was where your at about 3 months ago. The link that gazzip has offered is top notch information. You MUST read it if you really need to find out what you need to do in order to be successful. It has allowed me to make my first sale, $380 through sedo. The average 1st sale is much lower as I've been told by many on this and other forums. My second sales was a lot of 65 3 character .nets at $300 sold through NamePros. I am currently working on a deal for a Finance related domain in which I have generated by advertising the domain for sale via email to potential interested businesses. Thier offer is currently at $1,800 but I am standing firm at $2500. The last name is one that I purchased after reading all the helpful information at namenewbie.com. The first sale was for a name that didn't even interest me. It was in a lot of domain that I purchased on ebay. I wanted nationaltravel us but there were 5 other domains included in the lot so I ended up with that name by accident.
One thing I can say is that although being prepared by getting all the information working for you, sometimes It's just like Texas Hold Em, Most of the time the odds work out correctly, but sometimes when you think you've flopped the nuts, you take a bad beat on the river and sometimes when you have 1 percent chance to win all in after the flop, by the time the river is flipped, You come out smellin like a rose!

Good Luck and most importantly, have fun!

You can start by buying a quality domain name and parking it with trafficclub or one of the other cash parking services, such as godaddy.

Then you can promote your domain in the search engines by posting on blogs, forums, and submitting your domain to the directories.

Good luck.

Or if you want you can look into PPC (pay per click) adsence/yahoo/ect.

develope a site with ads on it when visitors click your ads you get moola. So far that is the most successful to myself.

Be sure to also check out http://www.domaining360.com which was created by one of our fellow NP'ers, Phronesis (but he sold it recently so I'm don't know who's operating it these days). This and the link mentioned above are both good starting points.

remember the first few domain you buy will not be that good even you think you are good at it. So take your time, don't buy too many and learn.

It takes time and study to know a good value on a "quality" (read expensive) name. The chances of hand registering a domain with good traffic are slight.

Then you can promote your domain in the search engines by posting on blogs, forums, and submitting your domain to the directories.

Good luck.
I do not know about Traffic club and Godaddy, but Sedo and other parking services will get very upset if you promote any name that you have parked with them, so check the rules first.

Or you can develop a website, and drive some traffic for it, and earn 0.5 to 5 (yes five US dollars) per clikc from google adsese

buy a domain , create some usefull informations and sing-up for:

I was the buyer :)

Be sure to read up on "noob mistakes" too. Search this forum if you need. If you make the wrong moves, it'll bite you hard in the end. But if you avoid those noob problems, you should do well. I just made $80 today. :) But it wasn't easy.. took me a week or 2 to find a buyer.

If there is a single piece of advice I could give anyone getting into this game, from my own expensively learned lessons, it would be "do nothing but read the forums for 3 months".

Most people would not follow this advice, I wouldn't have. After all, there were "premium names" out there unregistered and all the thousands of domainers who had gone before me clearly weren't as smart as me because, well, they'd left them unregistered. Uhoh, not quite, luckily most of my names weren't that bad and will fetch regfee and perhaps a little more on domain retirement homes such as Afternic Bazaar, but it's a lot of work to scrape back some of the initial investment and didn't exactly have companies lining up outside my door begging to buy my domains.

If you pushed me to name lesson #2 and #3?

#2 - Lower your expectations, then lower them again. You can make money doing this, but it is no easy ride and your odds of a 20k sale on Sedo for that random LLLL.com domain you just picked up are around the same as a lottery win. Even if you found a buyer ready to pay 20k, you'd never know it, and would you really turn down their first $1000 offer?

#3 - Develop your domains. Unless you get ahead of a new trend the best traffic/PPC names are taken. Ask yourself "What can I be the best in the world at?" and buy a good quality domain in that niche, then go do it. One well developed domain marketed well can bring you more income than you will ever make getting into the domain game in 2006, unless you have a lot of money to invest up front and a high tolerance for risk.

Hope this helps, and if it deflates you a little I'm sorry, but with hindsight I could have used a serious reality check at the beginning too...
