Hey guys, I hosted a chat at Ecom Expo last week on using video for affiliate sales. Below is the chat. At one point I pushed the .tv extension and I also gave some of my views on where online video and ecommerce is going.

I am speaking on a panel in 2 weeks at the Video On The Net show in Boston. You can be sure if I get the opportunity I will make a push for the extension again.

Rick Singh: Hello Sherman
Sherman Bahr: Hello
Richard Kligman: Hello everyone
Rick Singh: Hello Richard
Mike Gurney: Hi all
Richard Kligman: hello everyone
Richard Kligman: How is everyone enjoying the show so far?
Rick Singh: Not tired like at the Summit thats for sure
Richard Kligman: :)
Sherman Bahr: Its been a great resource.
Richard Kligman: This is my 3rd time attending this show
Sherman Bahr: Are we going to have audio.
Rick Singh: Ok, is this an open forum or will there be a presentation/agenda that we are following
Richard Kligman: Keeps getting better in my opinion
Richard Kligman: in just another minute or two we will get started
Richard Kligman: there is no official agenda, but I would like to stay on topic and I have prepared some questions to get us going
Rick Singh: Great
Richard Kligman: There seems to be a bit of a delay from the time I enter the text until it shows up. Must be the 1000's trying to get into this room :)
Rick Singh: Millions
Rick Singh: The bandwidth can't handle it
Richard Kligman: I was trying to be modest
Rick Singh: Modesty in affiliate marketing...rare indeed
Richard Kligman: Good Point
Richard Kligman: I would like to begin with a statement and see if you would agree or disagree
Rick Singh: Shoot
Richard Kligman: Video is the best way to sell a product or service besides face to face... Agree or disagree?
Rick Singh: Agree with a caveat...
Rick Singh: It has, HAS to be interactive and with a call to action
Richard Kligman: Anyone? Does anyone think that calling by phone would be better?
Rick Singh: I think this chat needs a VIDEO
Josh Prizer: is there going to be a webinar presentation like the other seminars? or is it just an online chat?
Sherman Bahr: Aggreed
Richard Kligman: Yes, there would be a need for some interactivity to make it worthwhile, although TV commercials as we know it does not always have a call to action
Rick Singh: There are several reasons for that
Rick Singh: Branding, Messaging, etc
Richard Kligman: In anycase I think it would make sense to say that video is the best way to drive affiliate sales online
Sherman Bahr: I think that talking on the phone is better but you are limited to one person.
Richard Kligman: Correct, Rick. I guess we should not call that "selling" persay
Rick Singh: Video "can" be the best way, still in infancy
Rick Singh: my 2 cents
Rick Singh: sorry carry on
Richard Kligman: I would agree Rick. We are still at the very beginning of seeing video to drive sales online
Richard Kligman: Affiliate companies are just getting started with the idea of using video in addition to banners
Richard Kligman: Has anyone seen any companies using video to allow their affiliates to drive sales?
Rick Singh: <-------
Richard Kligman: I know DrugStore.com has been active in this area.
Richard Kligman: I think in the next 12 - 24 months you will see as much as 75% of the top 500 affiliate companies offering videos to their affiliates
Richard Kligman: What do you think of Googles just announced Video Units? Do you plan on trying it out?
Rick Singh: This whole video offering was obviously launched to monetize their traffic, especially from Youtube
Richard Kligman: I agree
Richard Kligman: They are desparately looking for ways to monetize all the content
Sherman Bahr: Good Info
Richard Kligman: So far I am sure that the cost of badwidth far exceeds the ad revenue they have been generating
Richard Kligman: Google is the first of the big boys to go in this direction, although I am sure others will follow suit. It just makes sense (cents)
Rick Singh: Isn't that how the dot coms work - you build a need/demand and then worry about the infrastructure :)
Richard Kligman: :) That is how we ended up the way we did in 2000
Richard Kligman: Let me tell you what I think is the biggest mistake players in the online video world are making
Richard Kligman: Since YouTube became such a sensation everyone and their grandmother has been trying to get into online video
Richard Kligman: The problem is everyones thinking is using online video as entertainment and then worrying about how to monetize the "entertainment"
Rick Singh: Hey , my grandmother is pretty savvy
Rick Singh: but i digress
Richard Kligman: The problem is that almost everyone that is watching online video for entertainment does not want to see ads.
Richard Kligman: The whole industry is about looking for ways to piss users off (pardon my French)
Richard Kligman: Companies need to find ways to pull users to watch their "product and service" videos without having to push advertising
Sherman Bahr: .
Richard Kligman: Otherwise eventually users will figure out how to skip/block/ignore online video advertising as well
Richard Kligman: The real winners in my opinion will be those that figure out a way to sell products and services with video w/o being an interuptive advertisement
Richard Kligman: In the next 24 months I bet that 90% of the top 1000 Ecommerce sites will have some sort of video/s on their website
Richard Kligman: They may even have their own separate website just for video
Richard Kligman: That is one of the reasons the .TV extension is taking off the way it is
Richard Kligman: Brightcove.com just launched Brightcove.tv as their video destination site while keeping the .com as its information site
Richard Kligman: You will see a lot more of this. .TV is the fastest growing extension next to .com because of this
Richard Kligman: Everyone still awake?
Sherman Bahr: yes
Richard Kligman: Thank you Sherman! How about you, in the blue shirt in the back row?
Sherman Bahr: Why would'nt you want to keep the video on your main site?
Richard Kligman: If it is just one video you may tend to keep it on your main website, but if you have many products and many promotions you will want to have your own "Home Shopping Channel"
Richard Kligman: a 24 video site selling your products
Richard Kligman: Lets get back to the affiliate market though
Richard Kligman: What do you think will be more effective in video affiliate sales? User Generated Videos or professional videos supplied by the vendors?
Sherman Bahr: .
Richard Kligman: Sherman, I can't read if you typed anything
Richard Kligman: At first I thought User Generated videos would be perfect for affiliate marketers
Sherman Bahr: Sorry, I'm just tring to seporate the text.
Richard Kligman: Just grab your camera and create a video about a product you love that is being carried by a company you are an affiliate of.
Richard Kligman: NP Sherman
Richard Kligman: What I have found, from my company, is that most affiliates would rather just have more professional videos created by the companies and supplied to them rather then to create their own
Richard Kligman: Would you agree? Would you rather have videos supplied to you?
Rick Singh: Your original business model was user based correct?
Richard Kligman: Here is a video we just created for Dish Networks that they will soon be sending out to their affiliates to use to drive affiliate sales: http://qoof.com/Channel/Explorer.as...03fe&CID=465ab7ac-c443-4a67-9cd3-34de2cbff9a9
Richard Kligman: Correct Rick
Richard Kligman: We still think there is a market for user generated videos, but the adaption will take longer
Richard Kligman: We have found that most Ecommerce companies would rather create their own videos for their affiliates so that they can also control their brand
Sherman Bahr: Good day to you. I'm signing out. I will contact you later for moore info.
Richard Kligman: Ok, sherman thanks for coming
Richard Kligman: The chat is officially over, but I don't mind hanging out for any questions
Richard Kligman: the 1/2 hour went by fast
Richard Kligman: still have a lot more we can talk about :)
Richard Kligman: Any questions?\
Jay Hartwell: Sorry, I came in a little late
Rick Singh: so Richard, you are now establishing a connection with the Advertiser directly and having them create a video for you?
Rick Singh: to allow your publishers to use?
Richard Kligman: We actually have our own studios www.qoofstudios.com where we can film the videos for our clients
Rick Singh: That's what I figured as it is not the Advertisers model currently to get into videoproduction
Richard Kligman: Rick, I know that you have a experience and a focus on this industry. Anything you want to share?
Jay Hartwell: Can you suggest a host company who provides streaming servers
Richard Kligman: Rick, you are correct, very few companies have their own in house production studios. Ice.com being one of them
Rick Singh: See, we specialize in overlaid video technology - which is slightly diff. than what Qoof does, but at the end of teh day - it is about monetizing and increasing conversions for affiliates
Richard Kligman: We have been using VideoEgg.com Jay and have been very happy with them although we are not their typical client
Richard Kligman: Yeah Rick, I believe our companies are at the forefront of this industry and we will be sing many more players entering this space in the coming months
Richard Kligman: The good thing is their is a lot of room out there
Rick Singh: Yes there is - you guys are spot on in your methodology and approach
Jay Hartwell: Thanks
Richard Kligman: One of the things as an industry that we need to keep in mind is that content is still king and video content is the king of kings
Rick Singh: To your point earlier about the .tv - that is a seperate division we have for the video production
Richard Kligman: So you need to be able to supply the content
Rick Singh: precisely
Richard Kligman: I am a big fan of the .tv extension. Both for my company and personally as an investor
Rick Singh: what % of the videos are you creating vs. what advertisers are supplying you
Richard Kligman: I would say about 50/50
Rick Singh: if that is proprietary - i understand
Rick Singh: lol
Rick Singh: ok
Richard Kligman: :)
Richard Kligman: Don't tell anyone
Rick Singh: what is Qoofs model if you will - is it more of an ad network?
Rick Singh: or a production
Rick Singh: or both
Richard Kligman: Ok, if there is no more questions we can call this chat to an end. I will be speaking at the Video On the Net Show is Boston for those who may be attending
Richard Kligman: For me to know and you to find out Rick ;)
Rick Singh: cool, thnx
Rick Singh: lol
Rick Singh: good day everyone
Richard Kligman: I will be joining a panel discussion on monetizing video. See you there!
Richard Kligman: Thank you EcomExpo

Thanks for the thread Richard. It was interesting to "see" that the room seemed to stop when you mentioned .tv, as though they wanted to hear more about it. Gave people food for thought. Very nice plug for the ext. Rep added.
