domain I have an offer on www.clemson.sc

Hi - this is a domain (www.clemson.sc) I was thinking of developing, but I haven't had time. I've had a number of offers before. Someone contacted me recently and said his "client" was interested. He offered $750. I said no. He said he would talk to his client this weekend. This same person contacted me a year ago and was interested in the domain.

I might still develop this domain one day, but I think I would be willing to let it go for a good price.

Does anyone have ideas about what the domain would be worth to an end user?

This domain is a perfect example of how very wrong first impressions can be. At first I was going to say that I've very surprised you got a $750 offer for this domain. Clemson isn't that hot of a keyword and it is a weak extension, at least for the US market. I would guess a domain like this would be worth low to mid $xx at the very best.

Then I googled it and realized there is a town in South Carolina called Clemson ... so it would be Clemson SC and even better Clemson.sc. Clemson may not be a huge city but big enough to have a university.

I think you were right to reject the $750 offer. From an end user you could probably get $5k or so from this domain undeveloped (maybe more?) Put some work into making it a hot site for Clemson SC and your value would skyrocket.

Thanks for your reply. Yes, any U.S. person would know about "Clemson." Not only is it a town in South Carolina, it's a major university with popular sports teams and a large and very loyal alumni.

Do you have the resources to dev it into something solid?

Why not reply with a high counter offer? You never know, the client could be a well-to-do Tiger alumni who might be willing to fork out much more than $750.

Well, I know how to develop sites, yes. I've had thoughts about different ways to go with it. Although it could go for the town or the school, I'm thinking the school may be better in the end. However, that woud all depend on different things, of course. I think the person who wants to buy it is in real estate.

I would be careful if you develop it with anything to do with Clemson University, if you make money off of the site you could have a fat lawsuit on your hands.

It wasn't my idea to make a parking page or anything like that, but maybe a community site, etc. What did you learn from your experience about the types of things that are ok and the types that aren't? (besides what you mentioned above)

Golly... the list is almost too long to hit all the "do's" and "dont's" of sites like these, but in short:

DO NOT:
1) Have ads on the site of any sort.
2) Contact ClemsonU offering to sell.
3) Park the site.
4) http://www.wipo.int/amc/en/domains/cctld/sc/index.html (At least .sc is a UDRP ccTLD - although there has never been a .sc arbitration?)
5) Start posting it everywhere; the more noses that can smell it early on, the greater the likelihood that one of them will take umbrage with your having it.
