Im using a domain name but it is owned and registered by someone else.

It was his act of gratitude that he allows me to use that domain name for free but it was me who suggested the domain name to registered.

However I believe the domain name will be expiring very soon.

I was trying to contact this fellow but he never replied to my mails.

My question is is it possible to transfer the registration of that domain to me before it expires.

(My worry is that maybe he will no longer allow me to use it soon since it is already generating lots of visitors)

Thank for your help.

i would suggest not telling him (if it was your idea to reg it in the first place) that its going to expire and then just reg it yourself when it does... at yahoo you can reg for only 4.95 right now which is unbelievably cheap.

Since he has actual control of the domain name's registration, it's not possible to transfer ownership to you without his cooperation.

Of course he might now decide to take the traffic away from you, but that was the chance you took when you borrowed his domain. Have you tried calling him?

No I dont have any other contact info but his email.

I guess I'll have to wait for the domain name to expire and see what happens.

If it will appear expired then I will just take your advice to grab that chance to register it under my name.

I also found out that ipowerWeb has free domain name registration when purchasing webhosting package.

ISnt that cheaper compared to yahoo?

Such deals are common. However, check to see if the domain will actually be under your control, meaning you'd have an account at the registrar where you can configure the domain. If not, then you don't have control of the domain, and might not even have ownership; either situation would give you problems (or extra costs) down the road when you decide to shift webhosts.

Agreed with Armstrong ~ Read all the fine print up front ... Most "Value" Packages are Not a good value at all ~ They overcharge for the domain and/or Hosting most times !

If you do a whois on the domain you are talking about - you may find some more contact info on your buddy ~

Hopefully you will be able to grab the name if it does indeed expire and drop, if it has traffic and the Domain Hunters notice, it will be BO somewhere for sure which will give you no chance at getting it unless you play the BO game as well.

he has got you in a nice position for marketing his domain for him.

I'm going to suggest the alternative, because if the name is getting traffic (as you say) then I can almost guarantee you somebody else is going to snap it up when it expires.

You can try transferring it now (Maybe not locked?) if you get his permission and he's just hands off. Or do everything you can to get ahold of the guy. But, waiting til it expires will lose you your domain.

What can happen to a domain name without a valid telephone #?

Check the email and see if you can hack into his email acct and then transfer it. *evil grins* That'll be a bad way but of course, legally it will be better off trying your luck with him or snapping it when it expires. The chances of snapping a domain will be rather big if you're willing to bid against other domainers and of course might cost you some $$. But if the domain is really generating such good traffic, it is worth the chance and money. Try bidding it in all big snap companies such as Pool, Enom clubdrop, Snapnames, Namewinner. You will have a high chance of accquiring this domain this way.

Honorable advice.

I have had an account with ipowerweb.com for more than a year. They have given me excellent customer support, a great inexpensive hosting package, and an easy admin control panel. Having said that, I give them two thumbs up.

Now, about the issue before you. Come on, the guy has been up front with you all along. You should reciprocate. I find it hard to believe that he is not answering your emails, phone calls, or certified letters to him - if you sent any. Try harder to make contact with him.

If he has abandoned the domain by his actions, then perhaps you might be justified in selecting another registrar, and initiating a transfer request for the domain. If he has indeed abandoned all interest in the domain, then he might not respond to the registrar's transfer request, which will automatically result in the transfer going through at the end of five days, per ICANN's new transfer rule.

Now, if you decide to wait until the domain expires, you'll have to wait some additional weeks for the domain to drop. In which case you open the door to getting it back at an auction price, which could be quite high given its traffic stats.

Look at it this way, if your're waiting until the domain drops and it does indeed drop, then he probably abandoned the domain. If he abandoned the domain, then the ICANN transfer rule option will work, and so should your just getting in touch with him. On the other hand, if he did not abandoned the domain and merely forgot, or is waiting to compel you to pay for the renewal, and you transfer it, then fraud vitiates consent, which means that you will hold the domain in trust for him until he asks for it back. I recommend you opt for the honorable route.
