I end up with lots of crappy registrars in Asia, Eastern Europe and other interesting places. Very shaky looking sites. After 60 days I transfer them to GoDaddy so I can feel safer about them.

Now, with the advent of having to get authorization codes for every transfer, it's making my life miserable. I've spent most of the morning trying to get transfers going for 14 names from the least recognizable registrars. Most do not have a "Get Auth Code" function -- you have to contact them and ask for it.

But this reply from Goodluckdomains.com takes the cake today. I asked for the auth code nicely and this is what I got back:

We have received a mail from you requesting us for a transfer of your domains. We would be much grateful if you could let us know the reasons for the transferring of the domain. Many of the world's leading brand owners have chosen Good Luck Internet Services to manage their brands online. They have taken advantage of our state of the art, technology, lowest price and top-notch customer service. Our mission is to provide great value and seamless customer service. We wish you to re-consider your decision to transfer the domain name to another registrar and we will be much happy to retain you back as our esteemed client. We will appreciate your immediate response and awaiting to serve you better in the years to come.
No code given.

The nerve!

I wrote back:

I asked for the authorization code. Now please provide as required by ICANN.

I am consolidating my domains at my main registrar.

Awaiting my Auth code ASAP.

I should have kissed their butt so I could get the auth code faster, since they'll probalby want to mess with me now. But I couldn't.

Having to deal with jilted registrars discourages people from moving domains. I know I still have 5 at a registrar with very good service - but $9.75/yr .com pricing. They really have good service - but you do not often need service.

one major US company sent me a letter offering to knock their .com price down to near the level of the place I was moving to - on my whole collection, so good things can happen, too.

But I am sure that putting barriers in the way of moving domains was important in the decision to make this change.

I'll tell you what. It seriously is making me think twice on bidding at names at Snapnames and Pool.

I hear ya... your title says it all...

this cracks me up.

our state of the art, technology

state of the art technology?... but you still have to email them for the auth code. Give me a break.

Even at the easy registrars... it's still a pain in the a$$

Hang in there.

Now I'm geting asome codes given to me form registrars and I'm getting back messages that they not correct. LOL!

And then, here's another registrar:

Service Temporarily Unavailable

"The server is temporarily unable to service your request due to maintenance downtime or capacity problems. Please try again later."

OK, now that you responded wait for a while. If they don't budge then I suggest that you complain and make sure you CC ICANN registrar compliance dept:
registrar-info {AT} icann.org.
Hopefully this should speed up things.

PS: 'Goodluck' domains.com. Couldn't say it better myself

Here form another company. I told them this:

"'m trying to get the auth code from your site for my name xxxxxxx to work. It keeps coming back as failed. Please give me an auth code that will work and I will do it again."

And this was there reply:

"The domain secret/ Auth code for the domain name is located in the order details view of the domain name. You can refer the following kb link for information on locating the domain secret for your domain name http://manage.website.in/kb/servlet/KBServlet/faq620.html.

You can refer the following kb link for placing a transfer request for your domain name http://manage.website.in/kb/servlet/KBServlet/faq556.html.

Feel free to update this ticket, in case you need further assistance.

Have a nice day!

Regards,

Patrick."

I wrote back and told them to try reading my question again.

After reading this post I just sent them an email to transfer a snapped domain away from them. The response I got was entirely different:
-------------------------
Dear ,

Thank you for Contacting Namesbeyond.

The Authorization code for the domain ####.com is ##########

Should you require any assistance, please donโ€™t hesitate to contact us,

Looking forward to work with you,

Kind Regards

Amazingly, this response came within a few hours of my request. Now, if only I could get vividdomains.com to respond to my request for an auth code. I sent them an email and got no response. Then I called and they said you have to request the codes by email, so I tried again twice and still no response after more than a week.

They recently changed the rules so you now need an authorization code to transfer .com and .net domains. I got this info from Moniker:

------------------------------------
Date: 10/30/2006

To All Customers,

This is official notification that the RRP Protocol has been decommissioned from the Com/Net Production Environments during scheduled maintenance on October 28, 2006.
The new EPP Protocol used to manage Com/Net domains has the following additional requirement:
Transfer Behavior
All Transfer requests submitted after October 28 will require AuthInfo in order to initiate a transfer request. In the scenario where the domain name does not have an AuthInfo assigned the Losing Registrar must assign an AuthInfo code before the Gaining Registrar can initiate the transfer request.

I've got 13 of the 14 codes I need. I'm still stuck at cnobin.com. They kept telling me I had to click a "Get Augh Code" link on the Domain Manager page. I told them three times that it was not there. I finally had to send them a screenshot to prove it! So, they then said, sorry you are not a reseller and that's the only type of page it's on.

I wrote back and demanded the code or I'd report them to ICANN. I'm not a reseller in their reseller system because this is where Pool put me when I won an auction. No reply to that support ticket comments, and none to an email I sent directly.

So, I wrote to Pool just now and told them they need to help me out since they are using such suspect registrars.

I tell you, I don't think I will any longer buy names from Snapnames or Pool because of the creepy registrars that I often end up with. People bid the names higher than their market value anyway.

Thank goodness I'm with a registrar I like (GoDaddy), because if I had to transfer my 4300 names away, I think I'd go insane.

By the way, I'm sure this all will lead to higher renewal prices everywhere as no one is going to want to do the work for mass transfers.

Yea, I've had a pain in the butt with auth codes too. Even with just forgetting I need them with transferring my names from GoDaddy to Fab. I then have to go into each individual name on GoDaddy and have them freakin' email me each auth code, fun when transfering 20+ names because I really have all the time in the world to wait for the emails to come (which have taken as long as an hour to get sent). Transferring 1,000 names would be living hell.

And here I thought it was a pain to transfer about 100 domains out of GD... At least their system will give you an auth code. Although I have found that GD arbitrarily changes the auth codes at times--I had about a dozen domains pending transfer and the EPP code went through. Then, GD changed the codes and invalidated the transfers (even though the 60 day window had passed). I next caught GD on another one of my domains extending the 60 day window to more of a 80 day window. GD also seems to be doing sneaky things...

I finally got the auth ocdes for the 14 names . I'd say that I spent about 5-8 hours altogether going back and forth with the strange registrars. What a pain.

This should be a lesson to people to choose your registrar carefully (if you are not in an auction, and can). You may be there for quite a while.

When I started this domain obsession, I had around 50 names at a very samll registrar. Someone very wise told me to transfer them all to a very large and dependable registrar and start getting all my names there. That's what I did. I'd hate to think of being at a strange registrar now with over 4,000 names and be at their mercy since it's too much of a pain to transfer out. What if they went under? What if their system oerformance started sucking? What if they didn't keep up with the features I get on Godaddy and others get at other big-time registrars. Sure, Godaddy could suddenly start charging more, but I doubt they be much more htan other discounters. But I dont' have the fear that they will go under, or remove all the nice features they have, or they'll have outages very often.

Update: Oh great, I just won a snapnames auciton I forgot I was in and have yet antoehr registrar I never heard of. (:

Is anyone having trouble with domains registered by Proxy with GD??

I'm feeling the pain now. i had them all(proxy) for free then, now i can see the trick behind this.It seems, you need to cancel off your proxy by logging into proxy website before requesting the Authorization Code. Otherwise the requested code goes "God Knows Where".

Pain in the Tail !!! I'm in a deep brownie coz all the names i wanted to transfer are going to expire. No time to shamble.

I agree it is pain to get auth code. Someone should compile a list of registerars that do provide the code.
