Yeah, wow, big bucks to be made with this extension. (...by the registrar!, not domainers.)

As Rick blogged, Telnic is not auctioning off premium names IMHO. :|

Are you saying that they will prove to be as :$: GREEDY and inept as mTLD? :red:

Yeah I completely agree Galel -- When all these new extensions start coming out, I wouldn't be surprised to see some start complaining...

Imho, those with trademarks who already own the domain in other extensions should be given their name in the extension for free should their sunrise app be approved. I think we're going to see some angry corporations moving forward if not.

Has there been any talk about how much these are going to cost to register?

What I don't like about these extensions is that companies now have to go out and register their names and develop additional sites in order to protect their branding.

Kind of a pain in the ass, :imho:-, no?

No einstein, I'm noting that this will not be an extension that will be profitable for domainers to trade or resell in, except for maybe in a 100 or so 'in-demand' type names. So what would be it's use/need for domainers to buy into and invest in them?

..and

Please do tell us the best run tld registry out there, why so, and why you recommend them! You don't knock the .eu, .biz, or any other ones, so you must like and recommend them as good examples! (bet he doesn't answer!)

The only public hostilities, it seems, regarding the highly brandable .TEL ... are from the teeny few remaining and misguided "dot Mobey" enthusiasts folks, IMHO. :| :snaphappy:

You'll need to re-read both Rick's blog in its entirety and the full Telnic FAQ's to get a better understanding of the highly brandable .TEL ... the domains are not being auctioned (as inept and greedy mTLD has optioned to do for its "dot Mobey" generics / premiums in order to fill its own :$: coffers (versus the abandoned RFP process)! :guilty: :imho:

Of course, the failed "dot Mobey" is also unnecessary ... and, to address your comment; I've noted on many occassions that there are similar problems with the long, two sylllabled "dot INFO", as well. :gl:

Deep breaths, friend.

..You just arbitrarily make up things to acuse people of??!? D-:

You're now entirely off topic (which is, of course, the highly brandable .TEL), friend!

Take care.

Its potential cost of $375 at Dotster has been posted here: :gl:
http://www.namepros.com/domain-name-discussion/498653-where-to-register-tel.html

Although the thread was taken off topic (see above), I'd be very interested in others' thoughts and opinions regarding the very intriguing and highly brandable .TEL (including its costs), IMHO. :talk

Happy Thanksgiving, friends. :santa:

I think my $375 would go further in Vegas

In this depressed economy, one could pick up a pretty nice .com for that with a little shopping.
Wrap it up with a mini site / adsense = income generating with the lowest risk
VS
Spending a hunk on a hope that someone else wants to buy it for more someday?

Lest we forget renewals... approx $7 .com renewal fee vs $$ .tel renewal+ ?

Sorry..I just don't see this as a viable domainer investment. I'm sure many will disagree, but that's my opinion.

Great question ... I believe the $375 is for three years, after that I'm unsure? :|

Would you register, if you could, Flowers.tel ... for $375? Lastly, since the two extensions are so often discussed together, did you initially see the now faded "dot Mobey" as a viable domainer investment?
IYHO.

Weblord posted this earlier today in another thread:

Sunrise* 3 Dec 2008 – 2 Feb 2009 EUR €130.00 per year
Landrush* 3 Feb 2009 – 23 Mar 2009 EUR €120.00 per year
General From 24 Mar 2009 EUR €15.00 per year
From: http://www.europeregistry.com/domains/tel-domain-registration.htm?gclid=CLrsqt7JkpcCFRQNewodw1A-_A

It looks like registration fees will come down quite a bit soon. I like the idea -- much better idea to charge a higher regfee which will discourage domainers from speculating excessively in the extension than hoarding 5000 premiums :imho:

Long live the highly brandable .tel :hearts:

:o Good Grief! Now Reece has been infected with the Budgie's rambling nonsense. Quick, someone get Reece a nice LLLL premium quad to revive him and get him back to normal!

(and to the Budgie, let's not forget 'who' (yes, you!) took the subject off track!)

Honestly, I need to do some more reading into .tel as I'm struggling to understand the technical details of how it works, however I'm interested to see something new.

I still have plenty of .mobis for dev -- they make a great extension to develop now that prices have fallen to much more reasonable levels.

i dont see why one is better than the other. they are both designed to maximize revenue for the registry.

mTLD holding back those 5,000+ domains is actually good for domainer speculation... it is much like having a single domainer control them. if they did not hold back 5,000 names, they would have multiple owners and most likely be constantly for sale on the forums which would water down prices even more than they are now for quality keywords. it becomes a simple case of supply and demand.

i think it was a smart business move for mTLD to hold back 5,000+ premiums... this provides a good source of revenue which is essential in any business. the whole "greed" idea is just silly. its like saying businesses arnt in business to make money. somehow, certain people get the idea that if you are in business to make money, it must be some sort of scam or the idea will never be viable.

OK. Let's take that $375 dot com, add $14 & change..under $390 total for the three years, you've got a decent, established .com that you can build value with vs a total hold and hope crap shoot you can't monetize.

Jeff said:

Not gonna happen. I'm sure the few "premiums" that might make someone some money are already spoken for. Would I? As stated, no interest at all.

Not sure why they're talked about together as they couldn't be more different. As you well understand, one offers mobile / pc content while the other offers a template of contact info? How compelling is that?

As for mobi and domainers...my take is it's still a high risk domain. It doesn't offer much for parking revenue and not all names will bode well with the mobile web. Pick and choose wisely and you'll be fine. Pick names like a typical domainer would, based off of wordtraker results, and you might be in for a disappointment. As stated before, my opinion is mobi is a developers domain. If you can put up content, you'll do just fine. If you ave a name that has a mobile relevance, you'll be fine. Someone will want to develop it at some point. If you don't, you might be in for a long ride. Just my measly 2 sense.

There are plenty of businesses which do very well for themselves by giving stuff away for free (products, information).

Watered down prices would be good for the extension long term -- it means people who actually might be interested in developing the domains might be able to afford them. Mtld's idea that somehow auctions would find legitimate endusers is plain silly -- we all know there are plenty of stupid domainers out there who'll outbid endusers, especially on a mobi-enduser friendly platform like Sedo

Greed money! :gl: :imho:

Now back to the highly brandable .tel :!: :music:

haha, well i agree domainers are the primary people that buy these premium names and auctioning them off on sedo auction is probably not the best approach to reach end users. sedo is mostly a domainers realm.

but the "greed money" thing is just plain silly.... its called money to fuel your business.

Domaining - Its not just for the little guy anymore. ;)

True that. I have no beef with them -- it's their extension, they can do what they want with it including hoarding all the good domains for themselves and auctioning them off however they see fit.

With all these new extensions coming out, I guess the age of registries being little more than giant domainers with the financial resources to buy an extension is upon us.

I'm just not getting the "Highly brandable .tel"...BTW...has Jeff trademarked this?? :talk:

Why would anyone waste their time with this type of extension and what you do with it??!

e.g. I can go to Pizza Huts home page here in Australia (probably any country)..go to the contacts link and find any PH in the country, it's location, opening times etc etc.

Then when I get I'm done finding the info I want..I just hit back on my browser maybe once or twice...then look a the menu, and then, order online. Explain to me why the highly brandable .tel...is nothing more than a redundant extension, when, in actual fact, I can find details like this on any page and then continue on with my business, all without opening up another tab????

I don't get...honestly. Should be called .redundant

Oh well :cy: ...someones going to get rich :$: . I get the feeling it's not going to be domainers.

Oh yeah...if you just want contact details...go to the yellow pages online. :tu:

XXfireflyXX, have you actually looked into the features of .tel properly at telnic.org?... I think you'll find it's a little more univeral and convenient than yellowpages online (not mention it has so many more uses, like an online business card for example. Also, if you have a mobile phone and want to order a pizza, to download the website to get their number from your mobile takes time to download, with dot tel, its very fast to load. This is just one feature among many . It's a bloody brilliant idea and about time IMO.
