Ring, Ring - It's .TEL Calling

ICANN just announced the addition of .tel to the DNS root zone, making it the 15th top level domain under contract with ICANN on the Internet.

.tel isn't a domain in the traditional sense. It will not be competing with .mobi, which was introduced last year and is all about "making the Internet mobile".

Instead, .tel plans to become a cutting edge, decentralized, globally accessible and privacy-enhanced contact directory.

BTW it's perfectly possible to use protocols like skype:// or phone:// before a .com domain name.

IMO this is just as bad as .mobi.
A load of domainers will register the names, and barely anyone else.

Loads of end users are buying or registering the .mobi. Big corporations too, So .mobi is not to be compared to .tv as .tv has absolutley no history up to now.

so we got .mobi, we wil get .tel, when will be phone and cell. and every time they are gonna say, that one is not compiting with another because mobi will be for mobiles, cell will be for cells and phone will be for home phone line, and .tel will be used for telegraph.
lol. when ipod will make its i extension, etc. dear domainers, preprare your deep pockets.
