Everything networkmsia says is correct.
But if you were to get a domain with a hyphen and to develop it go with a hyphen in it. Search Engines, especially Google do not mind it all.
If you want to read up more of why a hyphen is ok if you were to develop it. Read Search Engine Guru,
Matt Cutt's Blog on hyphens in domain. Just be sure not to make it word-word-word-word.com. Just like networkmsia has suggested.
It's like what is commonly known(or 1 of the many reasons) with US phone #'s, why there is only 10 #'s(including the area code) in the phone #. I believe the study showed that the American people had an easier time remembering the phone # depending on the length of #'s. Apparently 10 was the charm.
So use that when selecting domain names. Short, not to short. To the point. Something you are others can remember or work with. Something that means something or has great value to the general public.
But on the other hand I have seen many domain names that were, well, not worth much, sell for alot. Some of them developed or not developed went for more than a pocket full of change.
