Hi all - advice please !

As a newbie to domaining some pointers about how to really appraise a domain would be very welcome. Most newbies start (myself included) by banging the domain into Estibot. High valuation = Good domain.

As we all know it doesn't quite work out like that.

So what's the best way to appraise a good domain ??? The Estibot value might give some sort of indication but other factors are required. For example how important are search stats ? Do you consider broad match or exact match monthly searches important ?

How many monthly searches make a good domain. Does this need to have a high CPC .

Let me give an example. I made the newbies mistake of buying the domain roulett.co purely on an Esibot value of $4700. Google keyword planner gives 2900 monthly searches with suggested CPC bid of $16. I assume that the CPC is good but 2900 searches is poor. What would be the minimum monthly searches for a domain to be worth a punt - maybe about 10,000 ?

How important is the age of the domain ?

There will be other things to consider and I want to pick the brains of those who know more than I. Any hints about how to REALLY appraise a domain will be invaluable - Thanks in advance ;)

Best,
Paul

Time and Experience are what will give you the best chance at accurately appraising a domain and even then it can vary alot. Search stats and CPC are great, but ultimately you could handreg something about an upcoming trend which has very few or no exact monthly searches and make a great profit, See the Cannabis/3DPrinting/Drone threads.

There are many different types of domains - Brandable, Exact Match, LLL, LLLL, NNNN, NNNNN .. the list goes on, each area has its on metrics of what is valuable and what isnt. A LLL . com may recieve 0 - 100 exact monthly searches but you wont find one for less than $10,000. An exact match domain could have 20,000 exact monthly searches but be worth a fraction of the LLL.

Rarity is valuable, when people are searching for gems in the expired/dropping lists they will probably be searching for domains over a certain age because they feel they are more likely to find a gem (It was easier to reg a good domain 6 years ago than it is today) although you will still find mostly terrible domains, and ultimately if the end user likes the domain age won't matter to them.

So to finish it off, Search stats can be important and can also mean nothing.
Age can be important and can also mean nothing.
CPC can be important and can also mean nothing.

Ultimately if you hang around here long enough you will start to get a feel for what certain domains are valuable and what isn't, i hope this helps you and doesn't confuse you haha.

Also have a look at sales (DNJournal) over the last 12 months, have a look at Brandbucket, Brandroot and Namerific to see what Brandables are being sold at. Watch DomainSherpa's interview with Andrew Rosenor to get a theory behind pricing exact match names via the Google Keyword Planner. All of this will build up your knowledge.

I use this formula and it works all the time

Appraisal Value = The agreement in pricing of what the Buyer is willing to pay & what the selling is willing to sell.

Hi Paul

I can give my skinny, straight from experience

"indications" as a "value" are not reliable, therefore untrue.
as only an "after the fact" sale, can gauge the accuracy of those results.

how much time and usage fee's will you expend, to prove worthwhile?

searches of any kind, really don't apply to non .com domains.... unless it's regional, where a cctld dominates. though for some extensions, there could be trickle down or typo traffic, depending on keyword/phrase.

age, is more important to other "domainers", so is search volume, pr, alexa, estibot, cpc, epc, backlinks, etc. etc.
but an end-user has never asked me, about those indicators.

the right domain for any business/service model, could be chosen, irrespective to any of the above factors.

so what does that all mean?

means a lot of time spent trying to understand what valuator, is valuable, along with how to apply it, along with gathering and analyzing volumes from those categories, may be fruitless in the end.

as only an "after the fact" sale can validate it.

what does that mean?

:)

imo...

Step 1: Sell it for as much as you can get.
Step 2: Use amount from step #1 for most accurate appraisal.

Your domains are worth whatever a buyer is willing to offer you!

Here's 27 factors I like to look at when evaluating a domain or development being sold. It might help give you a bigger picture idea as to why automated appraisal sites / scripts could never be anywhere near accurate (Even if all we considered in the list was current trends and market shifts, which those tools don't compensate for very well): https://www.namepros.com/threads/evaluation-facors-for-top-domains.839361/

Hope it helps,

just a note regarding search stats, its not always great. I have sites that have say 100k exact match searches, but this alone wont bring in 100k visitors a month. If you are planning on developing a domain the site/content/seo still plays a massive role in order for google to list your site at the top to get the 100k in. Hope that makes some sense.

Compare to similar sales and then also apply probability of the sale itself.
