I am looking for resources oh how to quote an SEO project for my friend.
He is looking to other companies and is getting seriously different price ranges.
What I do know is that the keywords are fairly competitive, example: stair lift
He has 4 fairly competitive keywords and 2 less competitive.
I know what he spends on his AD campaigns via yahoo, google, bing.
Should my quote be half of the 1 year ad campaign payout?
Or what?

I am not sure how this works. Any help would be fantastic.

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.

Many things in it.

First of all listen to the requirements of the client.

Then draw out a rough plan how you are gonna go about it.
This will give you idea what efforts are needed and how much time it will take.

Now rest depends on the money you charge for your time. [ As some people charge 200 for their 1 week and some charge 500 for their 1 week's time. ]

Forget about competition and what other guy will quote them. Just see that you are not wasting your time and making loss. So that will give you your lowest possible quote.

Thanks.

Good answer, nick. That's absolutely right. Don't think so much about what other quotes are and try to compare/contrast with them. Focus on what needs to be done, how much it'll cost and what you need to make as a profit and you have your quote!

If you're stuck on what timeframe you should charge for (i.e. for one month or 6 months or whatever) well...there's really no right answer, it depends on the situation and, again, the client's needs. Hope that helps.

A good thing to do will be to see what the average price is in the SEO market. You can check different freelance sites where there are hundreds of SEO projects being posted everyday. You can see the money that people place in their bids on the project description pages. You can get a good idea about the price at these sites.

You should see some SEO sites who offer SEO services and get some idea from them

Off shore or not

Alot depends on your SEO companies location. It looks like your client is not very geo-specific so he not like he needs to meet with the company offering the service. Prices from off-shore companies could be 20 per cent of the prices compared to some companies BUT you need to check out the companies past work history (existing clients).

Try to get full requirements from the clients, charge depends upon their needs. You can do by monthly basis or 3 months. Better charge for one month if they are satisfied you can continue.

Thanks.

I'd say it would depend on the type of SEO and online marketing campaign that the client wants and more importantly the needs of the website. If it still doesn't have a bit of web presence, then you need more time and the project will naturally cost more.
