Ever wondered how to make a portfolio sale?
I have been thinking, say instead of trying to flip individual names, what if I try to make a portfolio of say 100 names (niche to be decided - brandable, geo, EMD, single niche names etc,) and try to sell it, will it work.

Here are some limitations that I see:

    1) The end users may need only 1 domain and hence, wouldn't buy the portfolio
    2) Domainers may be the only one who may want to buy but they wouldn't pay
    3) What are the prospects with small registrars - will they buy? Like Godaddy buys big portfolios, will small registrars buy small ones? I see less chances

    4) What I do see as a prospect, is finding a niche and collecting like 20-50 decent domains. And then, finding one good buyer for the niche. This might work. Long shot, but looks like worth a try.

Have you tried such a thing so far? Ever had a portfolio sale? What kind and how was the experience?
Did you feel satisfied after the deal or you felt that you undersold?

Thoughts are welcome, even from those who haven't tried this out.

My opinion is this is not common unless you have super top tier names only. Even with that who knows if a price could be agreed upon. Its hard enough to sell one name let alone multiple names. If you were able to do so it would be to a fellow domainer and you would not get anywhere near full value. Selling names individually is much more likely.

If you have a good portfolio, selling won't be difficult

In general, you don't. It is rare unless you are unloading quality domains for very cheap.

It is hard to find one buyer that is interested in a portfolio with many different types of domains.

@Joe Styler says Godaddy will consider buying yours, if you have a Portfolio 1000+
    “generally speaking”

Would love more clarification on this.

It’s a topic not explored enough.

Pretty sure that number was 10,000 and that anything less would be possible, but pretty exceptional.

If the domains are related, you might be able to sell them .. but you'd probably have better long term net results by listing all your domains like normal one by one and then trying to upsell more domains after you make the first sale. That being said .. most end users typically only need/want one domain. Again though .. it depends on the specific domains, the niche and the actual buyer .. there are always exceptions, but I wouldn't base my business plan around it in most cases (again .. it ALWAYS depends on the specific domains .. without knowing the exact domains, we're all pretty much guessing).

Yes .. typically those looking to buy portfolios do so because they expect a lower price.

GoDaddy buys a couple 10,000 domain portfolios per year (maybe less). Most registrars do not own domains (as a domainer you could actually view that as competition and a conflict of interest). Selling to registrars is a very unrealistic business model.

Portfolio sales can be good if you just want to move a chunk of your portfolio .. but don't expect any miracles unless they're very good domains .. most of us domainers are pretty cheap and expect a big discount! lol

    But who would buy?

I agree. It won't be end user sales. But that's the whole point - Is it possible to make end user sale?

Agreed! It is pretty difficult to sell to end users. And registrars may not have a portfolio of their own.
    Kind of an unusual game.
Was just wondering if someone has done it by chance and would like to share

Ya and that again is not an end user sale, is it?
I am thinking of how to sell a portfolio to an end user.

But wouldnt end user would want one name

    If he owned multiple undeveloped domains;

That would make him... a domainer :xf.eek:

Might work in a complete niche investment for futuristic technology maybe.
But having said that, it looks like you sell one, and then ask the buyer if they are interested in more. And then, bring out that portfolio.

Sounds like one of those "nice problems". believe Portfolio sales uncommon most, rather most value ea, than sell pennies on the dollar,

Godaddy willing buy Portfolio 1000 10K DNs?
Either way, prohibits most wit a few exclusions.
"Portfolio" sale niche sales rarer; than 3L drops :LOL cool question! Find one specializes in it..
