I found a domain name I like that appeared available but then it said the whois is overdue and on another site it said the domain was in its redemption period? What does this mean and how do I get this domain?

You would have to convince the owner to redeem the domain -- this will cost somewhere around $100. Alternatively, you could backorder it, however the former is a better option if possible.

Try a GoDaddy backorder

I wouldn't try a GoDaddy backorder before knowing where the domain is registered.

The owner can still redeem the domain, at a price ($80 to $200+ depending on the registrar).

Option 1: approach the current owner. Be prepared to make a decent offer that covers the out of redemption fee. There is a risk that the owner will suddenly see value in the domain and ask for a hefty price.
Option 2: wait until the name drops. Other people might have backordered the same domain. You could have to compete with other bidders in a private auction.

I am going to try a backorder tomorrow I think...I am surprised it is still down but maybe they are in the process of renewal so we will see...
