Redemption period.... A Question?

I currently want a domain that is in redemption period. A whois query shows that it expired on November 16th.
Any idea when I can register the domain?

Purchasing expired or expiring domain names has become a cut-throat business. As a matter of fact, the odds of snagging an expiring name that is remotely desirable is about zero. That is where several services come into the picture.

for 30 days after expiration the domain is in the Registrar Redemption Period (status in WHOIS usually shows as the domain expires next year)

for the next 30 days the domain is in the Registry Redemption Period (status in WHOIS shows as Redemption Period)

for the 5 days after that the domain is in the Pending Delete Period (status in WHOIS shows as Pending Delete)

after that it becomes Available to register (usually drops are around 14:00 EST) ... of course with all the drop-catching companies , tasters and domainers looking for expired domains ... catching a domain at drop is rather difficult to say the least ...

(a more detailed description of the Domain Cycle is in this old thread)

It seems like more and more today the registrars are actually just holding domains, testing them and then releasing them if they have no traffic. The practice is rather dishonest in my opinion, since they don't give a fair opportunity to everyone else out there.

Charley is spot on. If its dropping, and its desireable, chances are there are about 25 other domainers who know about it and want it. You need to research and find out where it may end up, or if its at a place like TDNAM - it may already be spoken for (Godaddy auctions off expired domains, before the end of redemption).... Good luck.

a small correction regarding my previous post ...

there is also the 10/12/18 day (depends on registrar) Grace Period which is before the Registrar Redemption Period and while at it a domain can be renewed at the same price (renewal after the Grace Period requires a redemption fee , usually ~$80)

also ...

if the domain was registered at GoDaddy , the domain can be auctioned off during the Registrar Redemption Period and if there are bids it will not enter the Registry Redemption Period ...

similarly , domains regged Network Solutions or eNom will be auctioned off at NameJet (Pre-Release domains) before they enter the Registry Redemption Period ...

The status changed to Pending Delete now.
I guess, I'll backorder it.

I did a bit of research and found SnapNames, Pool, eNom and GoDaddy.

Which one do you people recommend?

I don't want to spend too much on this, as I am relatively sure the domain isn't desirable to others except me, it's just that I need it for something specific.

it depends on where it's now registered.

The domain's status shows as "Pending Delete".

So, does it matter where it was registered?

Yes.

You will have to fill your pockets to snag the domain if it is really good one. Otherwise just pay the backorder fees and enjoy.

TDNam is the one you need to select. The domain is registered with Godaddy.

ermm.. How do you know that the domain is registered with GoDaddy? I didn't even tell you the domain :p

Yeah, the domain I'm after is not really good for anyone except me so I guess I'm kind of lucky.

Lol, I made a mistake. This was to be written with another thread. Just ignore that. :)

Well then, pay the backorder fees and enjoy.

Backorder the domain at SnapNames.com, NameJet.com & Pool.com. One of those 3 should get it. If they do not grab the domain, you do not pay anything. If it's Pending Delete, ANY drop catcher can get it and it doesn't matter who it was registered with.
