Thanks, Gene and copper. I did a search at archive.org, and nothing is coming up. Yet, according to whois, there have been 10 records archived since 2007 :-/

Thank you as well, Joshua. I had a feeling it might be a sticky situation, I never even knew about this lock until today, and it's definitely something I'll have to keep in mind in the future.

Well then you've obviously missed all the posts the man has done for this exact domain trying to pump it in the hope that some other newbie will think its valuable.

For someone who's been around for a year you'd assume he would have spent some time in learning a little bit about domains, instead of buying cheap domains and hoping that people would pay 100s of dollars for it without a modicum of understanding why domains are worth 100s of dollars in the first place?

No offense but I think your response is unprofessional (even though you have somewhat of a point) considering your position here at Namepros.
I didn't know my position at Namepros requires that I do not speak the truth because it might hurt someone. If you find that unprofessional, thats your take.

T'is only because of my position here at Namepros that I even bother to try and tell people when they're going wrong. Want to quantify the time and effort theuniverse has spent on selling a domain that doesnt sell?

Each person whether it be domain registrant or business owner has an opinion as to what a name is worth. So while the poster could brush up on acquisition savvy, to outright say everything is crap is insulting & uncalled for.
Did anyone say that domaining is for people who don't use their brains?

After this domain has been indexed in all those threads above you'd assume that an end user is either dumb or an idiot to pay 100s of $$$ for that domain, most end users are not, everyone uses google nowadays. In fact, end users who will pay $$$ are quite savvy to the ways of the web, see Jingles post above.

Try to sell domains, yes. Try to make money, yes. But without knowledge all you'll be doing is 'leaving the business', which people claim to be doing with frightening regularity but never do.

This whole thread is dedicated to teaching you how to finding end users, not about doing the work for you. Why not take some time and read through it? It'll be a great set of information to have under your belt for future domain endeavors.

One of the points to being a moderator is to be courteous to other users. By coming off in such a manner with an opinion (even if most of us share it, it is still just an opinion in this case) is uncalled for.

I don't know where you get the whole brains part as I did not mention anything regarding that.

As far as other new members are concerned, they like any of us need to do our due diligence in regards to sales or purchases. So by insulting a name you don't care for under the premise of helping others out serves no legitimate purpose.

The first rule when contacting end users is not waste their time (and yours) with mediocre domains. Your own credibility is at stake.
End users are not dumb and they can feel it when the person at the other end is desperate to unload crap onto them :tri:

Today I received an E-mail offering a domain for sale, but it wasn't so great (I mean, both the E-mail and the domain).
The person should read this thread for advice.
Hint: he/she is member here. But it's not Theuniverse ;)

I disagree. As you can tell by his avatar, Samit has a really strong brain it pulsates and makes him smarter than everyone else which makes it ok for him to put down other members. [/sarcasm]

wth?

How the hell do you know how much someone has learned "about domains" here? and who are you to judge peoples trading strategies? I buy cheap domains all the time and expect people will pay 100s of dollars for them.

I didn't know my position at Namepros requires that I do not speak the truth because it might hurt someone. If you find that unprofessional, thats your take.
Exactly what truth are you speaking here? Are you saying it is a fact this guys domains are crap? Is it also a fact that an end user MUST be stupid or idiotic to buy domains whose sales threads are indexed in search engines?

Let's cut the crap. Where do you get off ruining this thread by trashing a member that is asking for help??

Samit, you're my buddy, jigglies and all, but I pretty much agree with nicedomains even though I don't think your points were necessarily all wrong -- but there's a way to say things without being personally insulting. If I were RJ, I wouldn't want one of my moderators representing my forum in that manner. Because when you're posting as a moderator, that's what you are -- a representative for NamePros. Maybe RJ doesn't care, but I would.

ripley.

Fair enough... theuniverse, you have an unconditional apology from me since the way it was said was wrong, even though the intent was to help, not to be offensive.

Though I'll reiterate - learn what makes domains valuable, that will help both, your purchase and sales decisions and provide you with better ROI.

HBK216 said:

Not just me tbh, no one on this forum at least finds it anywhere close to 'valuable' or it would have sold by now.

Wow, its ok for you to insult people, but when I insult a domain its a personal affront?

nicedomains said:

The same truth i've mentioned above in this post, or even my original one. Knowing which domain is valuable, why and to whom is half the battle won.

And like the man said, lets get back on topic, if you must say anything else on this topic, feel free to pm me or use the small exclamation point next to the post to report it and you can talk directly to management about it.

This was suggested before on another forum, and may have already been mentioned here.
I have had decent luck finding end users by buying google ads with adwords for those exact search terms in the domain, I often linked to my afternic or sedo sales page for that domain. I have sold about 5 domains this way.
Interesting approach, amcdonald.

What price range did you end up selling your domains this way and were they dot coms? How much did you end up spending per domain on the adwords and are you still using this approach?

Thanks, and repped.

NP

P.S.: I just discovered the rep function and so will rep Joshua and others who have been helpful. Sorry for being so ignorant about using the rep button, even though I did express thanks and appreciation in words.

Fantastic thread. It's been so useful, think I'll read it again :D

I'm pretty new to the domaining business. I registered a couple of names which I thought were worth millions, but I know better now.

I tried contacting a bunch of potential end users for one of my domains. My domain had something to do with sports and employment as did all the companies I contacted. Sent mails out to a dozen firms and 10 minutes later got a reply from a Blackberry asking "How much?". I rather panicked cause I hadn't thought about that and obviously I needed to reply right away.

Here's the mail with the necessary domains and mail ID's xxxed out:

Hi,

I have the domain name xxxxxxxxxx.xxx available for sale. It's a name that's very much inline with your business and it could be an additional way to drive visitors to your current website.

If you are interested in purchasing the domain, please reply to [email protected]. If not, please ignore this mail.

I know, awful approach mail and even worse follow up mail with the "Swiftappraisal.com values the domain at USD 500" to an end user. Thanks to Josh and all the others, I now have some idea about how to go about this.

Now, it's obvious that they are interested. How long would you'll suggest I wait before I try and contact them again?

I'd Start at $500.00, since that is what the "appraisal" states as its value, and that is what they replied to.

You can always go down.

Good Luck!

If they dont get back to you within 3 days, say Friday, then email them again on Monday asking if they had time to consider your offer. If they dont respond to that email within a day then send a followup stating that you lowered the price. If you want PM me the domain name, it may make things a little easier in terms of valuation. Sometimes EU just want to know how much, with no intention of buying, other times they have a price in mind and if you overshoot they get scared and will not reply.

Thanks for the advice Cy and bgmv. Sending a PM to you now bgmv. If it's allowed, I wouldn't mind posting my domain name and the company I contacted right here.

Edit: I hadn't done any follow up on this contact till just now and I believe that the mail I received asking me "How much?" was from the President of the company. The two letter mail ID which were obviously his initials, matches the initials of the President on the About us page of the company's site. First time lucky I guess getting through directly to a decision maker :)

I just found this appraisal site a few minutes ago:
http://www.webvaluer.org/

My experience is that most appraisal sites are way off, some by gross under-estimating, and others gross over-estimating. I checked a few names, and my impression is that the above site gives low estimates, but then does not give ridiculously low estimates as some domain tools do. But still on the low side, often very low, though perhaps not ridiculously low.

What do you think? Any better alternatives?
