How to Determin Genuine Traffic?

I am negotiating the purchase of a domain with an OVT with extension score of 500, the seller has agreed to change the DNS to my hosting company for 48 hours so I can analyse the traffic. The traffic will be nearly all type-in traffic.

I have a spare hosting account with traffic facts (traffic statistics add-on) at GoDaddy which the name will be pointed at. I would like to know how I can determine if the traffic is genuine?

With your stats analyzer, does it show how long the visitors generally stayed at the website?

Yes I think it does, but I don’t think it will help because the domain name doesn’t have a web site, and I am only allowed to put a blank page up. Any ideas?

Well with some stats analyzers you can tell where the visitor came from. Link, bookmark, type in, etc. Does yours?

The only other thing I can suggest is you could check to see if there are any incoming links with - http://www.urltrends.com/

Does it have a high result at overture with the word+extension ?

I don't want to sound too negative but be carefull of Pump & Dump scamming, it seems to be getting popular :td: There should be some threads on this if you do a search here at Namepros.

The domain name isn’t owned by a “domainer” rather a company that is just not using it, I contacted them to ask if they want to sell. It is a generic two word .com and they have not pointed out the OVT score to me its some thing I looked up my self. But they know I want to analyse the actual traffic so I am worried they might send false traffic to the name after they point the name to my host.

The name isn’t listed in any search engines or doesn’t seem to have any backlinks, so I expect that all the traffic will be type-in. As this is a generic .com we a negotiating at very high figures at the moment and I will be going higher if the traffic is decent.

I am only allowed to put up a blank page on the site. I will be using GoDaddy Traffic Facts to analyse the traffic. This can show IP of all unique visitors and location of each IP (in the world), number of times an IP has visited, can identify traffic from search engines and other referred websites.

That is what worries me. If you are negotiating for a "high" figure, it is very easy to buy literally thousands of unique IPs with the sophisticated and virtually undectable "human" traffic programs in existence today for less than $100.

Take the States for example, unique IPs from only this location. There are hundreds of sweatshops in the States using immigrant workers (both legal and illegal) from Mexico and Latin America and god knows where else, that will churn this out without the blink of an eye. And at a cost so so low, it baffles you why people even bother to live.

My best advise to you, is to check Google and Overture carefully against various permutation, estimate the brandability and authoritativeness of the domain you are buying, research category trends, then go for it.
