I was wondering how you know when it would be pretty much useless to backorder a domain at godaddy for the 8.99 and you need to backorder it snapnames or pool if you want to have a chance at getting a particular domain. Is there some threshold like with exact searches or something else you can look at where you can tell it isn't very likely godaddy will be able to obtain the name?

Thanks for the help.

GoDaddyGoDaddy
(Regarding pendingDelete domains only):

I wrote proprietary software with a complex formula to make this calculation for my clients, and it's accurate about 80% of the time, but generally speaking it's a combination of keyword search traffic, PPC, ad competition, market cap of underlying industry, domain's former age, number of potential end-users, number of TLDs registered, Alexa, # of backlinks, whether formerly in use by a domainer or end-user, etc., with market cap. probably being the most important factor. That's about as much as I can say. You just need to watch thousands of domains drop and see which service picks them up to build up your own intuition on where to backorder.

If a domain is already backordered on NameJet (all NJ backorders are publicly viewable), then clearly you shouldn't backorder it on GoDaddy as it will lose out to NJ 99% of the time.

It depends on what you mean by "best". Most likely to grab the domain? Best bang for your buck? Fewest participants in private auctions? The answer is not so simple. You can find an overview of the various backorder services here:

Backorder at the dropcatcher which has an arrangement with the current registrar.

Enom and Network Solutions regged domains, always backorder at NameJet.

Domains with no apparent value (ie won't get picked up by a backorder company) backorder at GoDaddy, or do it yourself.

However, if you really want a domain, backorder at all 3, SnapNames/NameJet/Pool. They're all free to backorder and only pay if you win.

I use pool.com to backorder some domains and the experience has been excellent so far. So I guess pool.com is best. Godaddy also have good backorder option
