How good is a GoDaddy backorder?

I had a backorder on a GoDaddy registered domain that dropped. I was the only backorderer. I didn't win the domain. Who did? According to my account manager somebody manually registered the domain at GoDaddy before their backorder system could capture the domain. Now that's a great backorder system! Before this I had won the majority of my backorders at GoDaddy. I was confident about their backorder system. Not any more :(

PS: Of course I use a GoDaddy backorder for domains I believe are undesirable to the big three, SnapNames/NameJet/Pool.

GD backorders can only beat handreggers, otherwise they are a waste of money. I successfully snapped a domain with them only once (and I can consider myself lucky...).

GD couldn't catch a cold during a raging epidemic.

Bad, very bad at dropcatching.

That should be can't beat handreggers :)

That's the truth: they can only beat humans, certainly they can't compete with other automated systems.

Sure of that ?
Did you check the whois ?
Given their less than straightforward checkout process that would surprise me.

Agree with the general feeling here -- that they can only beat out hand reggers. Then when you do not get the domain, you have a "backorder credit" in your account to use for trying to catch a different drop. Then you repeat until you use up the credit...

The problem is that I don't want to try 10 at a time because they charge for each of them, and I don't want to be stuck with 10 backorder credits in my account...

Another thing to keep in mind -- if different folks backorder the same domain name, they send it to "Auction" if they successfully capture it(not sure if that becomes a public TDNAM Auction or only the folks that backordered the domain can make bids).

Its a closed auction among the ones that had the backorder on the domain.

you get what you pay for, it's also very cheap compare to the others.

Let's clear up something here. They cannot even beat out handreggers. So they are basically useless as a competitive backorder option.

I must say that I have the same feeling sdsinc.

if a (common) domain I want is expiring, I can use godaddy's backorder service and forget about it. convenient.

IIRC, they include a year of auction membership with the backorder.

That's probably why my auction membership is valid until 2023 :)

Do you think that everything can be so bad?

Nope. I was puzzled, but it make sense now :)

It appears BMugford used them to beat out my desktop snapper on a name today (StA**************ty.com), so they're certainly better than hand-reg'ers, since I stomp all over hand-regers with desktop software.

They are not a contender to Snap/NJ/Pool, but they can generally beat a hand reg at least.

If there is a high demand domain the odds of them catching it are virtually 0%. Not only that but many deleting domains are not even available for backorder on their service for some reason.

If you are going after niche 3-4 Word .COM they catch some here and there.

The system itself is not the greatest as you have to pay ahead of time and keep reassigning backorder credits.
