I've recently wrote this for mydesignblog.com, and thought I'd share:

Creating a Favicon

by: mydesignblog.com

Favicons are the little images you see in the URL box when you’re visiting a site. They’re meant to be a distinguishing icon for a particular site that helps you remember it. When using Internet Explorer they don’t show up unless you’ve bookmarked the page, but in more recent browsers such as Firefox, they show up just by visiting the site. Here’s how you create one:

First off, you’ll need a graphics design program (e.g. Fireworks, Photoshop). Using the graphic design program create an icon, 16x16 pixels, that represents your site. Here's a couple of examples from ones I made for freshdezines.com and flashgamefun.com

favicon.gif
icon.ico

Now, favicons have to be saved in the .ico extension. Certain graphic programs do this, certain ones don’t. I know there’s a plugin that will allow Photoshop to do it. I recommend downloading IrfanView - http://www.irfanview.com/ - it’s free and it will allow you to convert .gif and .jpgs into all sorts of formats including .ico.

After you’ve converted the image to an .ico, you’ll need to place this code in between the <head> </head> tags on whatever pages you wish the favicon to display”

<LINK REL="SHORTCUT ICON" HREF="images/favicon.ico">

Of course, the /images/favicon.ico needs to be changed to wherever you’ve stored the favicon image.

Upload your files and you should be all set
