@Leo Angelo recently put together a comprehensive report on how to succeed as a domainer including portfolio management:
Building a successful domain portfolio requires more than just buying good domains. It demands strategic thinking, systematic organization, and disciplined management. Think of it as creating a mutual fund of digital assets.

Do you agree with the findings? Should a newbies follow the steps outlined for the best chance of success?

I will look more into this later, but it seems solid at first glance.

One thing I would remove is the section under "Tax Considerations" involving 1031 transactions -

  • Consider like-kind exchanges (1031) where applicable
The rules regarding these were changed. It almost exclusively applies to real estate now.

Doing exotic stuff like this is a good way to get extra attention from the IRS.

The best cheat code to not paying taxes is losing money.

How many years do you give a name before pruning as the report suggests?

That is not really much of a factor to me.

I drop domains that I lose confidence in.

Normally they are domains with some flaw like an alternative extension, mid tier GEO, hyphen, etc.

I rarely drop decent .COM.

Nice article.

He comes down hard on portfolio diversity, yet in the Real Portfolio Case Studies, it outperforms the rest.

Granted, you need to know what you’re doing—but that really applies to any strategy.

Diversity matters to a point.

Diversify in stocks, bonds, gold, real estate, crypto, etc. Sure.

Those are all different asset classes.

When it comes to domains, there is no point being diversified if it is just into worse options.

What makes a "good" domain is relatively well defined at this point.

What makes a bad domain is even more defined.

Some do well only selling fintech and crypto names. Others (like Abdulbasit / Sten) mostly brandables. One could think all these aren't very diverse given their specific focus.
