Even with my portfolio of only a few hundred domain names, every month I debate which to renew, which to let expire, which to sell and how best to sell them. I find myself going back and forth on which criteria are important in analyzing the portfolio, and worrying that I’m going to drop a domain name of value.

In today’s interview, we find out how an investor with 22,000 domain names manages his portfolio, including what process, metrics and tools he uses. This practical information is useful for domain investors at all levels.

This is an interesting this. I with only 44 domains is confused what to do with these. 22000 is amazingly big ocean.
thanks for sharing :)

Interesting to note that he puts reserves on keyword domains because of unpredictable demand (and how he also uses Flippa and Sedo to sell keyword domains in addition to Godaddy auctions). I'm also guilty of not auto-renewing domains, but Sam's practice of doing an annual check and just letting the auto-renew take care of things is preferable (I'm guilty of using the impending renewal date as an extra bit of artificial pressure to help make a decision on the domain). Sam's system, from what I recall from the show, was to divide his domains in two piles as part of his annual review:
  • The desirables: those that either 1. Made back their reg fee in parking 2. received at least one inquiry 3. Are currently in demand / liquid (3L/4L currently).
  • The undesirables: domains that don't match the above criteria and suffer any combination of 1. Low estibot valuation (<$500) 2. not an aged domain 3. few if any other extensions taken.
Thanks again for doing the show, Michael.
