How to add automated "Most Recent Topics/Posts" to index?

I'm thinking about adding a forum to one of my sites. What I'd like to do is have a box on my index page that shows the most recent topics or posts that have been added to the forums to try and entice people into using the discussion board. I'll probably be using phpbb since I don't have the money for vBulliten right now.

Does anyone know how I can do this?
